What equipment from packs, to clothes to shoes do you more experienced people recommemd to someone just starting out???

I figure, I just am overweight by 40lbs and want to include hiking on my path to being healthy again. Going from inactivity to a combined 9-10mile hike might be slightly overbearing on me so I want to ensure I don't muck up what seems an easy task.

I was thinking a backpack with water naturally but I'm assuming there's other equipment t for a beginner. For example, it's 4.9miles to the waterfall, but walking back 4.9 miles involves remembering your way back, do people bring some form of protein with them. Markers for trees, anything like that?

I was there two months ago. Bretty fun day hike, only takes a few hours. Just bring a bottle of water and wear a decent pair of shoes. Hiking boots not required, you could get away with Tennis Shoes. The hiking trail in Helen is good too, it connects to that park. I've done both trails in the same day. Then you can get a German dinner in Helen.

It's a very well marked trail and there are people all over it. You don't even need a backpack. No need for a map either. There is 0 chance of getting lost. If I hadent just moved I would go with you.

for a 10 mile hike i'd bring some snacks like some beef jerky, a snickers, some salami, cheese and an apple. though if you're trying to lose weight you should probably sub out the snickers for something healthier. i'd also recommend a trail map if it's someplace you've never been. and a warm layer, depending on forecast and how hot or cold you tend to run.

also, read reviews of the hike on alltrails dot com or google reviews

in general, get a solid pair of hiking boots or trail runners. i take about 2 to 3 liters of water on 8+ mile hikes, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, home made beef jerky, protein bar, orange or banana (banana may give you the shits so save it for last). also, i take a little bottle of DEET, sun screen, and gold bond powder (to dry my feet out to avoid blisters)

boonie hat, towel and extra pair of socks and undies (when im going to a swimming hole).
