Hey /out/, I'm currently improving my already pretty awesome backpack by adding some molle webbing to the belt, and I thought we could have a general /diy/-/out/ thread.

Have you made something yourself you use outside?
A knife? A jacket? A tarp? Repaired something yourself?

They sell cordura, merino wool, fleece, softshell, etc by the meter, straps, buckles, grommets, and so on.

And while they're from Germany, they ship in the EU and apparently worldwide as well.
They also have a gallery for stuff their customers made. I'll dump some images from there.
This is a silnylon tarp.
I really want to make a tent supported by just trekking poles, but I'm not sure how feasible that is for 3 people.

i guess i will only make a tarp and hammock. i will use the machine to repair stuff from time to time. so it will be a low cost basic machine. maybe one from Singer or AEG. New machines are often cheaper in this price class.

In some cities in Austria and Germany at least are "Soziale/Sozialökonomische Betriebe" that employ social outcasts, retards, etc as first steps to reintegrate them into society. They function as flea markets, thrift stores and used furniture shops and are very cheap.
I'd try something like that. Or search your local kleinanzeigen. For the occasional repair work and so on, any functioning machine will do.

Once, in a hurry to buy camping supplies, I forgot to buy a pot that can hang over a fire. I ended up Jerry-rigging my pot with a folding handle using paracord and a knife to balance the weight. I also forgot to buy a holster for my canteen so I ended up doing pic related. Paracord is truly the camping item of the gods.

I kind of want to make a backpacking quilt for summer camping, the kind that is essentially a sleeping bag with no insulation on the backside. Materials are expensive though and difficult to work with. I'll probably have to make a few prototypes before I actually give it a shot.

I added duck cloth knee patches to my favorite pair of cargos because they were getting worn out.
Planning on adding some to the seat for when I slide down steep hills.

i typically finish it to a pretty good edge with a bastard file before preforming the hardening and tempering, then sharpen it with a diamond sharpener afterwards. if you wish to know anything more specific, please feel free to ask.
