You get to keep a sharp and intact blade for more important uses. If you don't know how to keep a fire going without splitting the wood you should just stick to city living. It only makes sense to split big logs, which a knife can't do anyways.

Maybe, MAYBE if you're in full survival mode and only have a knife but even then why would you risk destroying one of if not the most important tool you possess in that situation. Seen these two webms quite a few times before and they still crack me up every time. You're batoning with a knife when you have a fucking hatchet/axe, something much more capable and the task you are undertaking... just WHY?!

To be fair, the saw looks pretty shit. Really wide spaced large and flat teeth. Not sure how that's going to go through anything without effort. He could have spent $20 on a decent folding saw but now he has to spend it on replacing his meme knife instead.

this will give you the rough idea. batoning is a way to safely and more efficiently cut wood with a knife instead of a hatchet if you need to. but you have to be mindful of the physical characteristics of the blade and tang.

most important thing is you always align the blade properly and hit it right above the point where it bites into wood. knives and axes are just metal wedges in the end there is no magical you can do this and can't do that. most knives break from batoning due to undue stress excreted on them with off center twisting the blade while hitting, and exerting force on the handle while hitting. you don't actually have to do any of that that's the funny thing about all this.

I often times can't find dry wood very quickly, so I saw up one of the lower 3 inch dead limbs on a conifer and baton through it a few times to get some good ass kindling. Nothing wrong with this.

i once arrived dark and heavy fog after rain everything was dripping wet you made a feather stick you could wring water out of it. if i didnt had my hatchet i would have had to baton the knife to get some dry middles exposed i could barely keep up as it was till the fire was strong enough to dry wood and self sustain. made feather sticks but tjey were shit only lit when i dribbled candlewax on them and couldnt light shit. it was a struggle. i managed to make a wind tunnel sort of natural furnace of embering wood that was hot enough to dry new branches.

I've had worse. Only I used a magnesium block and took shavings from it to get the fire going in a Dakota fire hole. It was like 2am and raining to beat the band. I only risked a fire because it was raining so hard. Otherwise, I'd have just eaten the stuff raw.

About 10 seconds into the video I thought "why not just carry a small splitting wedge...?" and then he broke one out. There's the question though, why not eschew batonning altogether and just use a wedge with a decent rock or log hammer? Is there a safety or practicality issue? I mean if you HAVE to split a thick piece of wood like that and it's obvious that your tool will not clear it?

To use a wooden wedge you need something hard to create the initial split anyway so a lot of people just carry on with their knife once they've started and keep batoning. Personally I think it's better to just carry smaller knives and bring a hatchet/trekking axe.
