Yeah, the Rif in northern Morocco are exactly like the Sierra Nevada in Spain (same mountain range, geologically)
The atmosphere of the Med is really cool. Comfy forests and gorgeous coastline where it isn't all developed. And the abundance of edible plants is the best part. You can find wild onions, garlic, carob, figs, thyme, rosemary, asparagus, artechokes...
Interestingly enough, the Atlas were once part of the Appalachian range when Africa was squished against N America.

You gotta be kidding me. I spent six years trekking all over that fucking continent as an engineering consultant, from Tanzania to Morocco, and from Algeria to Zambia. Fourteen countries. Spent a year in Uganda actually getting paid for doing almost nothing and tried to spend time learning something like I did when I spent a year traveling around Europe as a dumb 19-year old.

What I learned is that Africa is shit. Every. Last. Bit. Just utter shit. Some is Islamic shit, some is tribal shit, some is international scam shit (not just Nigeria, almost every African country has a scam running with confiscation or organized theft of US aid supplies for resale), some is just poor trash shit. Holy hell, Somalia and Ethiopia are just decaying corrupt economies, but Namibia made me want to cry. They're literally just sitting in mud not even trying to farm or survive or doing anything for days at a time, won't walk more than a dozen steps in a day to shit on a bush, waiting for a food truck to drop off packaged foods and water bottles from the US and Germany (no idea why Germany funds them so much). The trucks stopped delivering rice and beans because even with propane stoves and pots, Namibians won't fucking cook food, or even use a can opener, and they'll get sick from swallowing raw rice and dried beans and nearly die of starvation with cans of food all around. Imagine trying to help a literal nation of retarded chimp children who will just sit in one place staring at the horizon for seven days until you return with more food, and maybe their baby died so they threw it in the shit bushes ten steps away and forgot about it.

Nothing good comes out of Africa, and every one of us Europeans or Americans who had roots there should thank our fucking lucky stars that some white dudes bought our great-great- grandparents from the Arab slave traders and got us the fuck out of there.

It beats Cancun for a memorable vacation. I live in the UK atm so you can fly to Morocco for piss cheap. Dakar is also cheap to get to from the States especially if you go via Madrid, also you can get good deals to Ghana. Never been to East Africa but I'd like to; the further east and south you go, the less visa bullshit you have to deal with. Namibia, Botswana and SA are on my bucket list for /out/ purposes.

how was the food? where did you stay? any language difficulty? i'm mad jelly. morocco's on my short list for next country to visit, but it's a ways out since my wife's 5 months pregnant (but we took our first kid to japan when he was less than 2 years old, so we won't wait forever).

The food is exotic, but nothing mind-blowing, mostly slow-stewed meat and veggies. The street food in the cities is fantastic though.
I just sleep in the open or stay with locals when the weather is bad. I don't bother carrying a tent.
English is widely spoken these days, but I also speak French and I've been using Peace Corps resources to learn Berber which is the language of the mountains.

Ever since watching Blood Diamond I want to go to Mozambique and run around the bush like Solomon and Archer. Apparently there are man-eating lions there though.

This looks wonderful. My father has been there in the 80s, but nowadays I'm unsure if I would go into Arabic countries. The night sky should be as clear as you never experience it in a light polluted area like Europe or the US.
