Going hiking for the first time with a friend. Were going on a path where rattlesnakes live. On the off chance that i’ bitten, what should I do? Also, what precautions should I take when hiking in general?

No step on snek. They bite when provoked. That's why you're taught to step on things like logs instead of over them. Don't suck on it or try to tourniquet it. Long sticks are a hard counter for snakes.

I actually know some people that carry anti-venom (pit-viper AV) with them in an ice pack for really remote areas, it's expensive as hell but you only need a really tiny amount.

Scorpion anti-venom is much easier to get, and some people just keep it in their house if you live in AZ since the bark scorpion is the most venomous scorpion in NA and can kill your dogs or kids in a worst case scenario. My dog survived a bark sting without AV but it couldn't walk for 2 days.

For adders if you thump the ground with your stick as you walk, they feel the vibration and run away. Perhaps it works with rattlesnakes too. If you see one, thump the ground and see if it flees. Let us know the result.

Like most dangerous animals, make sure they know you're coming, and trail running is a bad idea in areas known for having rattlesnakes. I was running on a wide trail once and nearly stepped on a baby rattlesnake because I didn't see it in time.

CROFAB is crotalid antivenom of choice, no choice, oit is what it is... there is no other in North America, anyway...

Avoid, at all costs. Otherwise...cost to you will be $100,000 after 1 week of treatment after 1 week of rx at a hospital.

An tivenom is very expesinsive. $3,000.00 per vial. you may go through 12 vials in 24 hours. Veru effecftive (efficacsious) you need it if you've been envenomated. otherwsie you don't and you wont get it.

I got bitten yesterday by an eastern brown here in Oz. 12 hours ED visit.

Stepped on it and it tagged me above the ankle. Venom was lower down from the bite.

Apparently a dry or very minor envenomation.

Watch where you step when /out/, even in familiar places that are cleared.

On a more related note, OP if you get bit just grab it and bite back to assert dominance.This should also get your blood pumping to circulate the venom faster, preferably straight to your heart, where it will coagulate and kill you

I've seen a few rattlesnakes in Oregon, and each time I heard their rattle before I saw them. They don't want to bite you so unless you surprise one by stepping on it, or ignore its rattle and get too close, you'll be fine.
Rattlesnakes are the most polite venomous snake, to be honest.

Only about 1 in 10 buzznoodles I've run across have rattled at me. They're learning/evolving that the ones that warn get shot. Hell there's a scientific survey going on right now because people started finding adult rattlers with no rattle, it's becoming vestigial on the timber rattlers and massasaugas in my general region.

Got bitten by a brown or coastal taipan 6 days ago

The bandage will give you several hours of life by slowing it down.

Yeah

Had headaches and sweats, but blood work was good for any signs of thinning. They held out on antivenom as my neurological signs were fine. Had to stay in for 24 hours, though.

Funnily, the bite mark feels like it's not there. No swelling. Just red dots.

In saying that, for insect bites there's some evidence the suction helps it from itching/stinging so much and also if using one of those suckers puts the victim at ease then it's 100% worth it. shock and panic make the venom act faster

There's a time and a place for disposing of sneks, but the ones who shoot literally every longboi they come across are doing more harm than they know.

Also, rattlesnek tastes fucking amazing and I'm not above killing one or two a year for a good meal while /out/. I do have the courtesy of letting the ones that rattle at me go though.

It's best not to kill them unless your gonna eat them as well. So kudos.

Don't do anything dumb like reaching into a stand or log pile, use a stick and maintain a distance. Most of them will dry bite as a warning. So carry a hiking pole or a walking stick, avoid long grass, etc.

If you actually get bit, get away from the agitated snake, immobilise yourself as much as possible. Apply a semi-tight tourniquet on the mass around the area, and call poison control for more advice.
This sucking the poison nonsense will just aggravate the toxins, moving aggravates the toxins, etc. Stay calm.

That, and a compression bandage up the entire limb. Snake venom goes through the lymph nodes. As long as you do the bandage, the toxin won't start up until you take it off, which by that time you're in the hospital.

Compression bandage (not blood stopping, just firm), saves countless lives in Oz.
