In other countries it is similar.
Substantially in Europe (especially Spain or Portugal) or Italy (Abbruzzi, Molise) were there is a very low density of people you can just stop were nobody is and...nobody will be. It is pretty much more dangerous telling people were you go than to sleep were nobody knows.
In campsites I do not leave my stuff outside and leave a mess inside. The more the occasional thief (which is nearly always a guy form the very campsite) needs time, the more he will avoid.
When you sleep near to the boundaries of a campsite (and have e.g. a tent and a bicycle) you are out to watch out more. Maybe even try to change site when there is a road nearby.
I remember a year I was in the Normandy alps were an Englishman did sleep exhausted in his tent. He had closed with a locker the bike with all luggage on it (thinking it was way to heavy to get taken and of course with the locker could not ride away. He woke up in the middle of the night and while he was looking outside he just managed to see the thiefs: a group of 5 gypsies (Rom) talking together the bike and the luggage, bringing it over the small water filled drain, that was thought to be saved (by the camping owner). Police came but they did not get caught. He did loose everything.
I bet they did observe him since miles and waited for the right moment.
So, make sure nobody follows you, get suspicious if your are doubled by a car several times or by suspicious if people very nosily were you are bound for.
