If you don't mind crowds the dunes isn't a bad place exactly, but it is a little touristy. I enjoy going to Tippicanoe state park with the family from time to time, the trails are usually never crowded, and it is a nice park once you get out of the campgrounds proper. The HNF is a joke, but its still gods country down in that part of the state. Wisconsin is nice and there are some nice places in Illinois like starved rock state park and Shawnee national forest if you don't mind a bit of a drive.
