Hello /out/ I'm a tourist from /fit/ with 2 questions I'd appreciate advice on. I'm going on a multiweek backpacking trip in California soon and I have gear questions.

1. Rain Gear
Websites recommend jackets and stuff that are all kind of pricey. Any advice on just using a regular poncho and like a trash bag to cover my backpack. If that's stupid, I'd appreciate rain gear recommendations.

2. Warm Clothing
I have a shirts, long sleeve base layers, a thin but insulated jacket, and a beanie. But as a midwestern schmo I don't know what to expect up in the mountaitns. How cold does it get and what are your hiking outer layer recommednatiions for altitude?

you are on track to make the two biggest mistakes that newbies make-

1) expecting too much from budget gear
2) building your gear pile all at once.

it seems llike you cant avoid item 2.

a good backpack cover is less than 50 bucks. if you look at REI garage you can probably find a great one for 30-35 in fact there is a great osprey one on there for 35 as we speak. just get a real one.

when it comes to rain gear buying better gear means you have to change less which means you can bring less stuff which will in turn make your pack lighter and cheaper. you probably don't need full slicks, but a good gortex shell would suit your purposes and would also double as a warmth layer.

what mountains are you doing and in what months? California is a big state. you have a ton of weather possibilities depending on location.

also-- ideas to bring down price. if you thin you are gunna end up spending 500 bucks or more- get the REI credit card and membership because thatch 100 bucks off 5 percent back plus other discounts and rewards.

2) start asking close friends and family if they have any good gear they are sitting on. my buddy got geared the fuck out from some random coworker for a trip. i know if somone asked me to borrow gear i was not using for a few weeks i have a good amount of backup gear that i would lend in a heartbeat.

last bit of advice splurge at the end get two pairs of really nice socks. i have never regretted getting some nice socks.

Thanks. There's an REI in my city I'll probably hit up today. I have the backpack and everything but the rain gear and warm clothes. And the socks, good tip. We're hiking in the Sierra Nevadas on the John Muir

Prana pants are heavenly and can be worn many many days in a row with no issue. i like the zion with the zipper pocket on the side.

Beautiful trail, hiked it just over 4 years ago. The north end of the trail is in the Valley, which I believe is whats on fire right now but hopefully the part you're on will be safe.

but for real, how /fit/ are you? because being swole is a liability for long distance hiking, especially at elevation. if you have a special diet/regimen and want to make real distance you're going to have to throw it out, eat light packable calorie dense food, and deal with being hungry for stretches. if you're going with people who have experience listen to what they suggest. you don't want to be lugging a 90 lb pack of your special needs and quit 2 days in because you can't make your distance and don't want to fuck the trip up for everyone else.

re: layering, i was in the high country in kings canyon last week, and i wore thin, synthetic pants and a cotten short sleever t (yeah, rotten, i know, fuck off) with a light long sleeve sun shirt, and brought a light fleece and windbreaker for the morning, and a pair of hanes thermals to sleep in (i have a 19 degree bag), and i was perfect

re: rain, brief afternoon t-storms/showers aren't uncommon in the sierra in summer, or you an have 2 week stretches of perfect blue sky, or you can get blasted by heavy rain and hail for 5 hours straight (happened last weekend to some other backpackers i met on the trail). so you can roll the dice and go light and get fucked, or you can overprepare and lug extra shit you never touch.

I just pack my sea to summit nylon poncho. Costs about 60 bucks. Will cover you and backpack so no need for pack cover. Downside is you will look like Quasimodo.
