I don't really do much of anything and always find some sort of reason to put off getting into something new.
I had the idea recently since there is many lakes and other bodies of water, I could get a kayak and be able to do something without having to go through a lot of trouble. Being able to just fuck off for a while and go around the lake to islands sounds nice. Maybe do some fishing for fun too.
Is it really just as buying one and going out?
Is one for $200-$300 going to be junk?

Go for it, my dude! Kayaking is one of the most chill outing activities you can do. It's really nice going through rivers and creeks especially, in my opinion, as you get to see so many cool little vistas you might never have known about. Or you can just go out there and relax for hours, float through the water and read or do whatever mindless activity if that's more your speed. It's a fairly versatile hobby.
And I wouldn't be too concerned about getting a cheapo one. It's almost never a good idea to go out and buy the most expansive grand thing whenever you're first trying out an interest anyway. My $200 kayak has served my perfectly find, and in some cases has actually benefitted me more than an expensive one would have because I've taken it through some pretty harsh rocky rapids that it only survived through because it's made out of thick ass plastic, whereas a more expensive kayak tends to be more lightweight and delicate.
Would definitely recommend going for it though if you're interested and have the finances! Have fun!

Yes. I literally just ordered one last summer and took it for a ride in the sea once it arrived. Don't complicate things

Kayaking is a lot of fun and good exercise. I got into whitewater kayaking because it is more exciting and skillful but flat water can be nice if you are fishing or exploring islands. Check Craigslist or Kijiji, you will definitely find something.

Do it. You wont regret it.

Just make sure you do your research before buying a boat. Like previous people have said, buy a cheap boat, but remember what your buying is a dumpmaster. Get a feel for it. If you like it invest in a good boat before you do anything too extreme. Also wear a life vest amd have fun.

Agreed. Make sure to do your research, and know that few kayaks are designed to do most all things, cheap or high cost, same with canoes. If you're thinking of fishing from one, get one that's designed for it, even some you can stand in nowadays, and some really tricks them out too. ALWAYS wear a PFD, and practice being able to re-enter one before you get any distance from shore. One more thing, if you plan to ever go out in cold weather and cold water, its HIGHLY recommended that you look into a dry suit, which can be extremely expensive, or at the very least, a thick full body wetsuit. Cold water kills very quickly. And research and do even more research.

I ended up finding a aruba 10 for $130. Tried to jew it for a $100 on the phone since the ad was up for a while but the guy ended up just throwing in a vest and another flotation pad so it worked out.

I went in the pool and figured out don't fall out is the best option. Even with a vest on and using the bottom it's still 50/50. Hard to tip at least.

Kayaking is a great hobby. It's even better if you enjoy fishing.

A Walmart kayak is junk yes. It's poor quality and you're basically sitting on a 1/4" piece of foam. You'll be miserable within a hour of being on it. They also aren't very versatile.

You don't need a $2,000 Jackson or Hobie kayak either to feel comfortable.

All Kayaks have various features. Some are geared towards fishing with railing systems to mount rod holders, transducer mounts, etc.

I have had a long time favoritism towards Ocean Kayak brands. They are tri-hull design which adds extra stability for new kayakers. They also offer different models for different budgets. Look them up.

I've also heard good things about Perception, Wilderness Systems, and Old Town.
