Got a few 20" fish today, no keepers though. Got here around 9 at low tide, a bunch of guys were leaving when I got there with keeper fish and as the tide came in my luck dried up and I didnt get anything for the rest of the day.

I blew it guys. Huge school of something eating bait less than 10' from shore and I couldn't get a single hit. Tried fucking everything. Amazon is good if you know what you want, otherwise go to a local store and fingerfuck the rods and reels of your choice. If you buy a rod, reel and line from a store they'll also often offer to spool it for you as well.

i'd say try to find a fairly large, but local tackle shop. the ones that come to mind for me are fin feather and fur in ohio (3 locations, all in ohio, it's still a fairly small business that has really knowledgable people and a wide selection) and in the outer banks of north carolina, i think of T.W.'s bait and tackle, same situation as fin feather and fur outfitters, but in north carolina instead of ohio. they're big enough that they can afford to have a wide selection but small enough that they still rely on knowledgable employees to make the business work. i.e.: they can't afford to hire someone who doesn't know a lot about fishing already.

Is there a particular reason to not use a salt reel in freshwater?
People bitch about the Nasci and I haven't heard anything in particular about the Fuego, so why not buy a 2500 Battle II or BG instead?

What's wrong with the Nasci? It's a good reel and would be fine for saltwater as well as long as you don't dunk it in saltwater every single trip. Fuego is also solid for fresh/saltwater application. Many reels can handle both alright and that's what I prefer to use.
Pure saltwater reels are heavier than their freshwater counterpart. Also, they tend to be less smooth due to seals adding frictions

Second fishing trip and still nothing. Maybe bites, maybe weeds, I think just weeds. This time, I met someone who knew the lake, so I know my lure choice wasn't bad, it was all on my technique and spot choice and such.

Any more tips for beginners? Should I stick with this pond or try another lake? How should I pick where to fish and cast and what might be the most likely mistakes I'm making? Should I go simple and just try a hook, bobber, and worm next time?

I know it's hot, and time of day (read: water temperature) can have a lot of influence. But I also see a bunch of posts online about people fishing any season, saying it's a matter of technique.

I've tried everything I have that people recommend. The water is very clear, so I had the opportunity to literally watch some fish relatively close to the shore. The best I had was some follows, but the fish would look at the lure then turn away.

Still debating on type of line. I've done 4lb mono, 4lb fluoro and 6lb braid but everything has drawbacks. I'm doing a lot of jigging and light lures.

Mono stretches and floats.
Fluoro isn't as sensitive as braid, and honestly doesn't sink very fast at all. Also with a smaller reel I was having issues with line coming off the spool.
Braid isn't very abrasive resistant, floats, wind knots and you have to use a leader.

I'm stuck bros.

i'd say if it is going to be outside spend a little extra money and put a cover over it. sun can do a lot of damage to plastic if it gets constant exposure. it will fade the colour and make it brittle. short-term it will be fine uncovered out doors but just a few years of constant sun exposure could leave you with a sinking boat

I already got a tarp from walmart and put that over the kayak. It was the first thing I did for it since it's pretty cheap and fast. I also ordered a saddle rack system to put on the car and probably gonna buy a cart too because shit was heavier than I thought. It's socal coast so the weather shouldn't get too extreme.

oh rain and snow are the least of my concerns for the kayak, i mean it's a boat, it's designed to handle water, but sunlight degrades plastic. i think i'd make the rack flat, though do still consider some corrugated roofing over it, or if you can put it in a garage, all the better.

I already pick out a fairly shady spot in the yard. Sunlight do hit the spot in certain time of the day. Currently, I have a cheap polyethylene tarp over the kayak and completely blocking the kayak from the sunlight. However, I do hear that polyethylene can heat up from sunlight and make the kayak too hot so I might try to make the rack in a way that the tarp can hang and have minimal contact with the kayak. That’s I currently not tuck the tarp in completely and leave some space for hot air to escape and cool breeze to come in. However, the heat is rarely goes above 90 F even in summer here. I have no space in the garage so indoor storage is not an option.

As for a roof. I can clear some space to put the kayak under the patio roof. However, certain time of the day, the sun will reach it anyway. In the current spot, it sit in a narrow walkway next to the brick yard wall and the house so it would either be under the shade of the house or the wall or some tree except when the sun is right on top.

yeah that should be good. if you just buy posts for the foundation that are just a foot or two longer you can just hang the tarp over top of it and be set. if you want something super simple for your kayak but still super strong, i would do the following
>4 4x4 posts 6 feet long at the corners of a 12 foot by 4 foot box
>2 4 foot 4x4 posts half way between the 12 foot apart posts
>2x4x12 planks running down either side, with some 4 foot 2x4 pieces running across so they are about a foot off the ground so hopefully snakes and shit don't hang out under there

It’s on top of concrete so I just gonna have a simple perpendicular plank on bottom of each post. Gonna see how that work out. If it’s not strong enough then I would just reinforce it later. One advantage i can see is that to put it on the rack, I can just put one end of the kayak on one side first, then lift up the other end and grab the other part and put it under.

It’s true that just killing carp won’t fixed a polluted lake but if the lake get cleaned up, killing the carps also help reintroducing native game fishes. For water that are already clean but have carp in, killing carps, especially big ones, would also help native game fishes and allow game fishes to get bigger. Big carps have few predators that can eat them and also take in a lot of small foods, including eggs and fish fries to maintain their bodysize. They also breed signficantly faster than other fishes.

there is no way to clean out an entire lake of carp short of poisoning the whole thing, unless its a small pond. i live on a ~900 acre lake and we regularly go out and shoot a 50 gallon drum full of carp. it makes no dent in the populations.

It's a Daiwa Tatula LT size 2000. I bought it because over a CI4+ because it's cheaper, lighter (5.8oz), and doesn't have an elbow joint on the handle.
Would recommend if you got the dosh.

Anyone else use gear they find? I have a tackle box slot full of things I found on the shore or stuck in trees or pulled up, and I pulled up a full rod and reel that works and I still use it.

If you're in the Ozarks then pick a river. If you're near a spot like the White River or the Arkansas River then go there. Any attractor pattern fly will draw a brown trout from those waters.

Source: I used to live in Oklahoma and fished the Ozarks quite a bit. Still do when I go to visit my parents which is pretty often.

It really is a cool place. Prices aren't bad either. I always stop there and then the bait shop off SPID (can't remember the name) right before you get to the island. Fish all day then go eat at scuttlebuts. Every time.

I was there the first of this month, but I didn't fish too much. We went for the gfs birthday, so we mostly did what she wanted to. Probably won't be able to go again until after September.

At least you're close enough to do a one or two day trip. Anything less than a 3 day trip is pretty brutal for me lol.

Cos Way Bait and Tackle? That's where I normally go as its on the way, but I think there's another one close to Snoopy's. Haven't been there though.

I just assembled some 6.5" spoons for striper fishing in the lakes near me, so if I hit up PINS I'm gonna test them out on whatever surf critters are hungry as long as seaweed isn't coming in thick AF. Otherwise, Bob Hall it is.

I think some sort of event with the current is going on this time of which brings fish you normally find around the rigs in close though, so I may just slide line some piggy perch or mullet out and chill. Is BHP still strict on bringing alcohol?

I have no idea. I've never actually fished there. The closest I've come to pier fishing has been the jetties at mustang state park. Most of my fishing is in the bay, or just cruising the beach casting out cut mullet and drinking beer.

Have any of you guys ever used a Van Staal reel? Apparently they're a little sluggish on the retrieve since the sealing gaskets cause a bunch of resistance. Dying to finger one and feel it but none of the tackle stores near me have them.

pretty common to use them for bigger sized fw fish. sturgeon, big cats ect...I like fw reels that you can access the spools so when i fish them in sw i can easily rinse them out. not so easy with a fw reel that you cant pop off the sideplate

How do you guys go about finding places to fish on Google maps? I live near a flowage in central Wisconsin, but the fishing in it is terrible compared to natural lakes so I've been looking around on Google. Keep doing your thing and don't get a worm and a bobber like a five year old.

Keep a lookout for any kind of wood structure or heavy lilypads and avoid areas in direct sunlight or current.

What lures are you using? Something like a chatterbait or a whopper plopper might help draw bass to you if you're having trouble finding them

I run Ross Eddys and Piscifun Swords for my 4wt and 6wt reels. I ordered them online. I've also heard great things about the Echo Ion and Redington Zero reels. I think Skid uses the Echo Ion and is a fan. I'd also recommend the Redington Behemoth or another larger reel if you want to throw streamers for bigger brown trout later but you'll also want to run at least a 6wt or larger fly rod for that. Ozark brown trout can get fucking massive.

HOW do I tie fishing gut to a spark plug?

I've been losing all my pyramid sinkers because they get stuck on the rocks where the surf enter a river channel where I fish and I want to use spark plugs instead because they don't get caught in between the rocks.

depends on the size of the walleye they stocked it with and your local laws. it might be fishable now / until all the low hanging fish over the legal minimum length are gone. or it might be two years, barring any major setbacks like no winter freeze or a winter freeze that's too hard or a chemical spill or an algae bloom, and how strict the laws are enforced; do chinks and mudslimes swerve down to the lake and keep everything over 4 inches or do game & wildlife come through and check bags every now and then

What's a good 7 foot or longer rod that is sensitive enough to go fishing for trout but also durable enough to catch up to 10lb catfish?

I'm going camping after September to a lake that has both trout and catfish. I plan to fish early morning for trout and late in the evenings for catfish, and want to narrow down to 1 setup because I will be hiking and backpacking.

I think I'm going to go with the Pen Pursuit 3000 for my reel, with 8lb Berkley Vanish.

As for the rod, I want something long so I can cast far because the banks gradually drop off. It's more of a lake for kayaks and jon boats.

I've been thinking of the 7' Ugly Stik Elite Medium action but I was wondering if there was something in the 8-9' range that is still under $50?

Minn Kota makes a 48 volt outboard replacement. I've got a Terrova 112 36 volt front mount on my 1300 lb 18 foot V-hull, and it'll pull me 4 mph if the water's calm, so I bet that you could get decent service out of that outboard especially on a smaller boat.

i think ponds are much easier to figure out than lakes. try casting along the bank, like 1-2 feet from the edge and fancast out from there. also be sneeki when you approach the bank there could be a fish sitting right under you.
anywhere with shade along the bank has a good chance of holding a bass this time of year.
try using a senko. they work anywhere and they work very well. 80 percent of the time all you have to do is cast it and let it sink. twitch it across the bottom if you dont get hit right away. you'll see your line move when you get a bite. let em swim with some slack for like 3-4 seconds before you swing. not too long or youll gut hook them. also make sure you reel your slack before you set the hook.

Last weekend me and a buddy were fishing for cats from 10AM to 7PM. Ended up getting a single one around 2PM. When we were walking back to our car we decided to cast off a bridge 30ft below just for the hell of it and I got another catfish literally as soon as my shrimp hit the water (didn't even get my drag set).

When I pulled that thing up all the bystanders on the bridge were eyeing me like "wow he must be a pro" but even for a 30inch fish it wasn't a satisfying catch in the slightest when we were out the whole day elsewhere.

Bullet weights allow for a disconnect with the bait, allowing it to sink semi-freely.

Any type of jig head is connected to the bait, so it sinks with the jighead. They both give different presentations but ultimately do the same thing

Is fluoro a meme? Everything I read says that you need to be super careful tying knots and re-tie after every fish.

But on the flipside, people say it’s abrasion resistant and more sensitive than mono. Would I be better off using just using a denser mono?

just stick with mono, line isn't going to attract more or less fish, and to answer your question, yeah fluro does slip out of knots more often, especially if you're using cinches and snells, but no, it isn't noticeably more sensitive than mono, actually now that I think about it, because fluro is so much more supple the opposite is true, I think because of how stiff it is, at least I, feel strikes on submerged lures better on mono.

Fluoro is a complete meme and actually a scam. It's LESS abrasion resistant than mono and sensitivity doesn't matter if your're only using a few feet as a leader. The only thing that's good about fluoro is that it's slightly more transparent than mono underwater and even that's debatable because all fluoro has a slightly smaller diameter than it's mono counterpart.

For pike fishing (Netherlands) it's sometimes used as a leader with really thick floro (40-60 lbs) but pikes aren't lineshy so a steel wire thingie works just as well. And for that matter, 60 lbs mono would work just as well too.

It's actually harder in a pond depending on where that pond is located. Ponds with easy access have a lot more fishing pressure, meaning the fish are more wary.

It’s weird. I can hunt turkeys and deer no problem. I can also happily blow the brains of a red squirrel or a cow bird with my air rifle out in our yard but when it comes to a fish I’m not going to eat I really don’t like causing serious damage to them. Can’t really explain why.

I hate causing unnecessary harm to a fish I won't eat either but it's still a risk you take when you fish. I fish mostly catch and release as well. Work on your hook sets, your strike detection, and crimp your barbs to minimize damage. Otherwise you may as well only subsistence fish or just quit fishing altogether if you're gonna feel bad about every snagged fish you pull in.

I ordered an Ugly Stik Elite for Steelhead/Salmon.

I couldn't find any difference in them other than the longer length, so I went with the 9' medium light one. I'm wondering if I should put 10lb mono on it and use 4-6lb fluro leaders when trout fishing or would just 10lb fluro be fine for trout? It looks a little thick but again it's fluro so should it make a difference? Trout in the lake I fish are stocked and heavily pressured by all the kids day/free fish days the forest service offers on weekends. Thus,, they are very line shy.

Honestly, anything that isn't LMB. I know there's a billion plus places I can fly fish for trout once I get into the front range, but I don't know specifically which rivers are good. I've read there's a handful of places I can troll or jig for Salmon/lake trout as well and that there's lakes that are good for pike and muskie (I think William's fork res?) Horsetooth Reservoir has the best smallie fishing in the state, I usually catch 100+ a day up there along the rocky dams.

For trout,South Platte in deckers is nice but heavily pressured. St. Vrain, Big Thompson and Poudre all produce big numbers of Browns, rainbows and cutbows.

If you want fat Yellow Perch, Go to Estes Lake. No limit on them as they are invasive, good trout fishing as well. They also have huge muskie if you have the gear and are lucky.

For Walleye, you need a boat. Seldom can you catch them from the bank here, even at night. Aurora is probably the best for Walleye in the state next to Boyd Lake and Carter Lake.

as for WIlliams Fork, they have been electrocuting/No limiting for the intent of removing Walleye and Pike from the lake for the past 3 or 4 years. Not a pike place anymore. You want Pike, go to Eleven Mile or Spinney Reservoir

People seem to like those Okuma SST rods, they sell a light rod that’s 7’3” or something and you could probably get some distance with that if you run 4-6lb mono or like 10lb braid.

So if I have a rod rated 3/4-4 oz and one rated 1/2-2 the lighter one throws smaller stuff better, even though it's minimum is only a quarter of an ounce lower it wasn't made with the backbone for up to 4 ounces. I've got the 3/4-4 rod fot jigging and big swimbaits but was thinking about picking up an intermediate between that and my 1/4-3/4 inshore dink rod I could use to prospect wider swathes of water, since it'll give me another 3 feet or so over my schoolie gear.

Have been trying to catch a decent (at least 12in) largemouth bass all summer.
Went to a small lake with my buddy last night, got a hug hit on my second cast. Great fight, managed to get him to the shore. Channel cat ~20in long. The hook must've torn through his jaw as I hoisted him out, he got away.

One of my goals for the year is to eat something that I've grown/foraged, eat a fish I've caught, and eat an animal I've shot. That cat looked delicious.
