Anyone here make sassafras tea or filé powder from the leaves?
Also can you eat the leaves straight up? Just discovered these grow in my area

most of us in north america should be able to find this plant. wild sarsaparilla. it's probably knee height and tends to grow in shade. there's three branches each with a 3 +2 leaf arrangement. It's a relative of ginseng. you can pull up the long woody root, dry it and grind it to make a tea that is antibacterial and also gives energy kind of like ginseng. has white flowers at times at purple berries. berries can be eaten but not recommended as they are an astringent and could make you sick.

saskatoon berries. I think americans call them june berries. They're pretty much look like a blueberry. the leaves of the tree are really distinctly round in shape and have a saw like pattern at the edges. The berries can get as big as a small marble and have a matte skin, not shiny. The berry is sweet and tastes basically like a blueberry. Once you get good at identifying the leaves of the tree it can get easy to spot others. I've mostly found them on the sides of hills. They grow on trees not bushes, but the trees seem to be not huge.

Sarsaparilla and Sassafras are two different plants. With sassafras you want to shave the "root bark" off to make tea. Dig down a bit at the base of the tree and rip out a handful of the smaller root, rinse it off, let dry then scrape the outer coating of the root into a pile.
Steep in hot water for a bit and drink up.
A little goes a long way.

I have had dandelion, raw, it was fine. Careful where you collect it. Burdock, both the leaves (boiled in coconut milk) and the root (boiled). Chokecherries: eat 'em fresh or boil and press for juice or jelly. Pine mushrooms (very tasty). Nuts (hazelnuts, spanish chestnut, walnut).

I used to make it all the time. Id pull up the roots and make a dark brown red pot of it and add a little sugar . Stuff is amazing tasting . Cool thread op. Didnt know there were so many people who enjoyed it as much as i do

And yes i agree with you. The root is where its at for the tea. The leafs are good if you dont have lemon zest and need a natural substitute. Ive nearly picked all of it on my land . Ive had to leave it alone for a couple of years because it takes so long for it to grow back .

Also not been on my usual dog walk for a few weeks, pic related is a mighty fine bounty, should I continue to let these increase in size before I slice a few off or take now, i've seen an anon freezes them for longevity does this change their texture much?

If you freeze them or any mushroom don't thaw and then cook. Throw them in a pan with oil/butter so they retain their texture.
