I live in an area that doesn't allow open carry, even when hiking and fairly strict on gun control in general. Not that I really mind. However, a few times when hiking and what not, I've run into cyotes and other potential threats, but have gotten by safely. I'm thinking my EDC knife wouldn't do much to keep me safe, and an axe doesn't really have the reach or handling I'd be looking for in a tight spot.
So I'm thinking about some kind of larger blade. Tanto, maachete, whatever. Would you recommend this? Or should I just pussy out and get bear spray/mace/etc instead?
