>>1330632>>1330632I know a few people who have done it, and unless you're doing it with a support crew following you, it's going to take the better part of a year.
Let's say your total distance will be 3,000 miles. Walking 8 hours a day for a total of 24 miles, that's 125 days of travel at a bare minimum. You're going to need rest days, of course, so let's say you rest 1 day a week because you're a fucking machine. So that's 142 days. Weather isn't going to be perfect, especially over a period of time that long, so let's say you lose a total of 15 days to bad weather or unsafe walking conditions. We're up to 157. You're probably going to experience an injury of some kind, and that will need a week to heal, so now we're up to 164 days. So at an absolute minimum, you're looking at 5 1/2 month walk.
But unless you're a world-class athlete, you're not going to be able to maintain a 3mph pace for 8 hours a day, every single day. Your average daily mileage is going to be closer to 18 due to all sorts of factors that will slow you down for various reasons. And you're going to need more than 1 rest day per week on average, probably closer to 2. So all told, if you're doing nothing but walking and walking your heart out every single day, it's going to take you about 235 days, or 8 months.
Personally, I tried to walk from Phoenix to NYC, but made it to Denver before sustaining a really bad case of planar fascitis. I then decided to bicycle the rest of the way there. Also, if you're going to walk, try to plan a route that takes you through as little of the Great Plain as possible. You will lose your god-damned mind walking across flat cornfields for 3 months.
