Is it safe to eat suburban cottontail rabbit this time of year? What should be the protocol in checking to see if such a rabbit is safe to eat?

You can eat rabbit at any time anywhere with any parasites in them. This is because we have this thing called "cooking" that destroys all parasites, their cysts, and microorganisms. The real problem is during butchering. You shouldn't let the blood get on your hands. There are a few diseases that you can catch from that, but general good butchering practices eliminate the danger. It is also a bit rare in the first place. You are more likely to get a disease from a tick or flea that comes off the animal as its body starts to cool down and the parasite jumps ship to you.

There used to be a screencap going around with an anon who eats roadkill saying it's fine to eat rotting meat as long as you remove any flesh that sloughs off with washing and cook the meat to extinction. Anyone have it?

Kinda sorta, I did this once back when I was living in Virginia and nailed the little guy with my crossbow but it freaked out one of my neighbors and they called the cops. Apparently it traumatized their poor little snowflakes when they saw me shoot the neighborhood pest.

On one hand there will still be a lot of bacteria in the parts of the meat that aren't falling apart.

But on the other, the parts that aren't falling apart won't have the bacteria at such a concentration and mature enough to be filled with toxins.

I would be very skeptical, I have grown bacterial colonies before and they grow really fast.
