In fact, I get annoyed at arrogant city slickers that do not greet you on the trail. A simple "grias di/grüß gott/grias enkch/servus" or even "hallo/guten tag" if you don't speak dialect is mandatory.

I tried hiking the AT once (just a stretch in my area) and was bombarded by young 20 somethings wanting to chit chat and talk about their gear with everybody they see. I can't find enjoyment in hiking and that just makes it even worse.

Whats an appropriate distance, roughly? I start looking for eye contact too far away I think. After a second or two, I say fuck it and sometimes they end up saying hello later. Other times I wait too long and I think they assume Im ignoring them and they just walk by.
