More money has been thrown and R&D than ever before, and that will ultimately mean better gear, even if at an higher price. All those fibers, membranes, alloys and all being tried in the scene is the result of tons of money being pumped in by your average weekend warrior.
A company offering a better price/quality relation deal doesn't mean the overall product was itself better than what is being produced today.
You can say that in the first half of the last century you could buy a solid pair of boots for a fair price and go mountaineering with them, it does't mean that boot would even perform as good as your over the counter cheap shit hiking boots.
