Not only are they extremely durable, but you won't lose the watch if a springbar is knocked loose as they are fed between both bars individually. You can switch them out much faster than normal straps aswell, allowing you to switch to different colored straps or materials on the fly.
Metal can be great and looks awesome, especially on higher end watches which tend to not snag your hair (Vostok's are great but holy shit some of those bands RIP hair out). However you can run into serious issues when out in the cold. No real issue if you have it strapped over a wetsuit, sleeve, glove, etc, but that exposed steel on your skin is bad news when you're at risk of frostbite. Otherwise, no issues, other than being reflective if that's an issue for you.
Rubber/Resin/Silicone can be just fine. Some say certain rubber straps irritate their skin, but that's never been an issue for me. They don't breath well either, but again it's never been a real issue for me.
Leather can look very nice, but moisture can be a bitch if the leather isn't treated. But if you take care of it they're very durable and breath well.
NATO's and leather are definitely my favorites, gonna grab a leather NATO strap next actually.
