it could be done, but it wouldnt be a relaxing experience by any means.
our train systems are shit pretty shit, and very slow. you could probably do it this way but youd be spending most of your vacation either sitting on a train or waiting for one.
walking across the US would take months. nobody picks up hitchhikers anymore. at least on the east coast i rarely see anyone hitchhiking and have never in my life seen a hitchhiker get picked up. not even women.
if youre determined to see NYC and the GC, just fly. but if you want to sit on a train or the side of the road for 8 days straight be my guest.
im sure it will make a nice story to tell all of your immigrant housemates.
