>>1339911One Americorps season, a couple years of construction experience, and a VERY loosely-related degree got me my job.
I got hired on as a GS4 Forestry Technician (Wilderness/Trails), and am now a GS5 doing the same work. In general one Americorps season on its own with no other certs or qualifications will get you hired on for sure as a GS3 doing pretty much whatever, trails, fire, dev rec etc... My boss flat-out told me my MCC experience was the main reason he hired me though, the rest basically just got me through the Albuquerque referral process to get my ass in a chair in front of a human being.
Supposedly Americorps service gets you limited preferential hiring but in practice it's nowhere near as reliable or available as it is for veterans.
I still haven't spent any of my ed award, now that I'm thinking about it. Thinking I might spend it on a WFR course this winter while I'm unemployed.
BTW Americorps will cover any student loan interest you accrue for the duration of your service.
