In the water?

Seriously, though, it comes to a lot of factors.

In shallower water, you can read the features. Fish like shelter and irregularities. A hump or dip on the bottom may host fish. Also, points, bends, the end of a rapids, for example, are more places where fish may likely hang out.

In deep water, it can be a little more difficult without the use of electronics.

In still freshwater it can be difficult. During a particularly long dry spell last summer the rivers near me dropped almost 3 vertical feet, so I got to get a good look at the bottom composition and even build some rockpiles where they would later get covered in a few feet of water. In moving water look for swells and breaking currents. In the ocean just scope out coastal areas at low tide.

I actually never got the fucker to take anything, but he was in a rock lee in water so shallow his dorsal was out of the water. I was there 2 hours and had like 20 follows but no takes. I threw everything from sz 18 copper johns to sz 6 wooly buggers at him.

I was sight fishing for bluegill when I spotted this large "bluegill" in the water. I threw my green midge fly over it a couple times until it took it. Was surprised to see it was just a dink bass. Was nice, I guess. Hadn't caught bass in weeks.

Been fishing for about 2 months non-stop now since I've had an employment gap. Already feel like I'm decent at catching bass. Want to try fishing muskie, gar, blue cats, stripers, and pike next. Seems like not having a boat is the limiting factor for me catching big fish species.

Gar are a shallow, slow/stillwater fish. Should have no problem getting them from shore.

Pike and muskies hold deep in the summer but will move within range of shore as it starts to cool down. They're also a prime icefishing species. You will be able to pull hammer handles out of the reeds in the summer tho. Muskies from shore require robust equipment as you will need to horse on them to keep from wrapping you up on weeds and structure.

Blue cats will be dependent on terrain I can reach them from shore here but we have channels, rock wing dams, and undercuts. Your waters may not. Small live sunfish or big live shad/shiners on a slip sinker rig work well on them.

Stripers, whites, and wipers tend to be an open water schooling fish. You might be able to reach them from shore, particularly in the spring, but generally require a boat.

3rd day trying to catch my first carp ended in failure. i at least saw one this time. big.
i have been using method leads with hair rigs. oatmeal sweet corn and jello as pack bait. had scented fake corn on the hairs. had a lot of bites, but as soon as i touch the rod they're gone. eventually i cut the hairs off and just tried putting real corn straight on the hook. same results, lots of bites, no hook ups.
also had one rod with a slip sinker and size 2 baitholder hook cover in corn. 2 turtles and a bluegill on that one.
i am running out of ideas. i'm using 15lb braid for everything, i dunno if that is spooking them or what but i dont think i can go any lighter and still land a big one.
maybe its just too hot, maybe i'm just shit at fishing. i'm pretty shit at everything else.

get some shrink tubing and set your hooks at a 45 degree angle if they keep spitting it out, that way it'll increase your chances to catch their lip, there's also treble hooks which work even better

i use an 18in 20lb fluorocarbon leader going to a #8 or #6 eagle claw baitholder hook for carp all the way up to 20lbs and #4 korda kaptor hooks with a 40lb fluoro leader if i have a legit chance at a 20+ lbs carp

i found carp will pick up on braid somehow, since switching to fluoro leaders i've had some decent success but idk if that actually has anything to do with it

Drowning worms works for trout. No need for leaders.

Place your split shot 6-10" above the hook, then your bobber however far above that will get you to the depth you want. If you're trying to fish more than 3 feet deep a slip-bobber helps a ton (put a bobber stop or knot of mono at the depth you want and let the bobber slide between your splitshot and it).

If you can, and your reel is rated for line small enough, buy a spool of 6 lb mono and put it on there. Should only cost a couple bucks. If you want to fish worms you have all the terminal tackle you need. Tie the hook to the end of that line with a uni knot. Next, take your split shot a pinch it onto your line ~6-8 inches above the hook. If you have issue with the sinker sliding down, put an overhand knot in your line just below the sinker and it will stop it. Lastly, clip on your bobber. How far up your bobber is, is dependent on the depth of the section you are fishing. If you make a move to a new spot make sure you adjust to that new depth. Ideally you want to have your worm riding just above if not grazing the top of the bottom. This is assuming you are fishing a river or stream.

I’ve never noticed much difference in when you decide to kill it. Most people just put them on ice right out of the water. That’s what I do too. Bleeding them will cut down on the messiness but that’s all that really does. If you are thinking you’d rather not have them slowly die on ice you can give them a hard knock to the head and they are out. Either way they should be put on ice and kept on ice until you are ready to clean them. Plus the cold stiffens them up a bit making them easier to make clean cuts on.

For a good memecaster you're gonna have to drop a bit more than $150, get a nano fiber 7ft rod, Shimano Curado reel and you'll be flicking those 1/4 oz lures further than you could ever imagine. It's a right pain to ween yourself off all the drag/brake/magnetic assists without birdnesting but once you figure it out you're golden.

I use cheap and Zebco Omniflex mono that you can get at Walmart for almost all my monofilament needs. It's like 1.98 for 300 yds or some shit. Never had a problem. If it works then go for it.

Been fishing inshore saltwater from banks and on friend's boats with both fly and conventional gear for a bit now. I'm purchasing a kayak as a birthday present to myself next month and I'll be able to finance a skiff by next year so I can go further out on my own but lately I've hit a problem. I feel as though I'm not satisfied anymore and have gone back to my childhood and teenage fishing roots of lake and pond hopping for largemouth and spotted bass. Have a regressed? Am I retarded for going from fly fishing for tailing reds to throwing senkos and (still fly fishing) poppers for bass in local ponds? I'm just enjoying the change up and I'm discovering a lot of hidden fishing spots I never thought about.

The way I see it, anglers have a cycle of "I wanna catch fish" where they can stay until the get complacent where it diverges to "I wanna catch big fish" and "I wanna catch fish in challenging ways" Though even if you decide to challenge yourself all anglers usually end up back at big fish. I'm explaining this poorly but I don't really wanna create a big flow chart for this autism

I started with bass growing up in Kentucky and then went on to bigger bass and stripers in Oklahoma. I later joined the military and started saltwater and fly fishing. Now I'm back to bass fishing with quite a bit of fly and saltwater for good measure. I don't use regular topwaters at all for example. I just tie poppers and gurglers and use my fly rod. I think I came to some super autistic full circle.

Not sure bout the Puget Sound but I've heard of folks getting surf perch and halibut on the West Coast. That's what one of my Marines used to catch after he left our unit in Lejeune and went to Pendleton in California.

I looked it up briefly. You guys probably don’t have california halibut on the surf there but there are mainly surf perches. Try clam/mussel/sandcrab or gulp sandworm on a carolina rig and drag it slowly to start out instead of spoon.

Why would you go from a kayak to a skiff unless your kayak is shitty. I wouldn’t take a skiff anywhere inshore that I can’t take a kayak. I think just throwing in a trolling motor on a kayak and save money for a boat or more fishing shit down the line is better.

Skiffs get you moving much faster so I can cover more ground and are actually a lot hardier in choppy water than a kayak. Plus, I can take more than one person on the water should I want to. Bigger baits and keep moving if you are in the little ones. From what I have seen white bass tend to go in schools of their own age group outside of springtime. I have never seen a white bass that won't hit anything flashy and big, so go bigger until you start to weed out the little guys if you have to. It's also possible your lake just doesn't have many or any big ones.

During the springtime it gets really easy. They head up rivers to spawn in big numbers so you can just toss something (relatively) big near river mouths and you will catch plenty.

The biggest white bass I have ever seen caught was on a 3.5 inch pike spoon my dad casted as a joke as I doubted his philosophy of big bait =big fish. He purposefully made a huge splash with it and not a second after it landed a 3 pounder hit it after we had been catching 1 pounders all day.

If you are using a big bait and are going to be throwing is for any decent amount of time a bigger handle like that is a relief to use. Making the length of the handle shaft longer helps too.

If you arnt going to be throwing big baits there isn’t much point though

I don't get out on the ocean as much as I'd like, but that being said; Don't wash your reel, wipe it off with a damp rag since washing can drive the salt deeper into the mechanism. Always have a few steel leaders with you, 6" works well for me but it depends on what toothy fish are around you. At low tide you can discern where sandbars and structure are or you can look for rips and swells in the current. Big slicks of smooth water are also a great sign that there's something obstructing the current near the bottom.

You should run water softy through the line on the spool though. The line hold saltwater, especially for braid. Just don't put it on high pressure.
For spinning rod, I just leave the spool on and run the water through. I run it away from the main gear though and put it on a low setting. You can take spool off before rinsing if you want too. For baitcaster, I remove the spool before rinsing the line though.

For rods
Daiwa harrier inshore is on sale at multiple store. DSG has the shimano curado rod and exage on sale. I got myself an exage casting from there today because I want a shorter casting rod for kayak fishing in the harbor. I would have brought the daiwa rod but it didn’t have any casting rod on sale pass the medium light weight at 1/8 - 5/8 and I wanted something a bit heavier than that.

Fucking fish always swallowing hooks. I wonder if I should get larger hooks; I'm catching perch mostly, in the 6-10" range, and using what I'm pretty sure are #4 hooks. And the fuckers keep swallowing them somehow. I'm sick of murdering fish; I just want to catch an release. And yes, I've studied how to disgorge hooks from thoats; it works about half the time at best. Should I file my barbs off? Bend them in? What does /out/ do?

Guys I was at the pier today and got skunked. Fuck this gay earth. Anyways. while fishign I saw a ton of tiny bait fish schooling on the surface. Do you guys have any idea what fish this is and how to fish for them? I dapped a #8 owner mosquito with a tiny bit of squid bait on the surface and they all got spooked and swam away. this is in malibu california btw

Im not one to shy away from micro fishing and if i can catch them and use them as bait, that's even better! also saw A TON of fucking striped mullet flying out of the water like they were asian fucking carp. i threw a spinner at them, threw dropshot with anchovy. even used a jig with feathers. they were flying all over the fucking place but i didn't get a single bite.

Here's my pb calico. 8lbs and 23", got him spearfishing in ~10' of water. He had a 8" sargo hanging out of his throat. Honestly all the biggest calicos I've seen have been on boiler rocks in 10 feet or less.

Not the same calico here, but try scaling them and baking them whole stuffed with lemon, garlic and herbs. I started doing this with calico and sargo on the beach on nights where I don't get out of the water until dark and don't wanna bother filleting them late.

Chest will probably better since they work well in any season. If you find yourself using them a lot during the summer on hot days, hip waders will be slightly cooler and might be something to consider.

As far as pvc vs neoprene, id only recomend neoprene if you are fishing in cold water. You will sweat your balls off it’s not already cold outside. Pvc are always going to be the cheapest choice because they are the lowest quality product. They tear easily, degrade if left in direct sunlight, and don’t offer any breathability so they are still pretty hot.

What you want is a nice pair of breathable waders. They are light, they are thin, they hold up really well (at least in my experience), and they can be used in both really cold and really hot conditions and it’s easily adaptable.

a lot of that $700 is for the time of the person hand making it. performance wise, assuming you have the same blank and components, you wont feel much if any difference. what you're paying for is a professional with thousands of hours of experience to perfectly align and assemble everything. you can get a lot of rods cheaper than that, with some companies you are paying for a name, too. i mean if you are confident in your ability to make a rod by all means go for it, but i personally would rather just get one that i know was built right and has a warranty if it wasn't, but that's just me.

Did you not see the post right above you? A well made fly rod will be just that. Well made. Certainly better quality than someone could do themselves unless they have a lot of experience.

Think about it like this. You can either build your own fly rod for 300, and that’s that. If it breaks, it’s done. If you buy a nice brand name rod they will have lifetime warranty that allow you to get a free rod replacement regardless of how or why the rod broke. Basically you are investing in the ownership of the rod for as long as you are alive.

I’ve done the research. The price it costs to buy a blank and make your own rod that is identical to the brand name rod is so not worth it. Sage blanks are dumb expensive, I don’t think you can even buy Scott blanks anywhere. If I was going to make a fly rod myself I’d use north fork composte blank but that’s still $240 minimum just for the blank.

mudhole sells literally every blank sage has. st croix too.

comparing basically the same rod from sage, st croix, and rod geeks, the difference is a third of an ounce (2. 2.3, 2.33 respectively). the sage blank is $347, st croix 320, rod geeks 134.

so my question again... is there an actual performance difference you will notice if you made a rod on the sage blank, or are you paying a premium for the name? guarantee no one could discern a third of an ounce difference in their hand.

Not to mention for the price you have to pay for those sage blanks it’s kinda stupid not to buy it from sage and get the lifetime warranty for a few hundred more.

If you don’t feel the immediate benefits of using a well made blank over a regular blank than idk what to tell you. Go to any fly shop and ask to cast some rods. It will be pretty apparent.

Technically streamers and nymphs are wet flies. The only other category of "wet" fly is an emerger. I have used emergers here and there but in the US they just don't see much use. The best one I find is a march brown.

Fish have slime layers that they need to protect themselves from disease. Some fish are more hardy than others. Bass won’t get that fucked it you put them on the ground. Trout on the other hand? You put that thing down on the ground you better be planning to take it home cause it’s pretty screwed at that point. Back in the 90s, I lived in a State where it was illegal to use a cast net for anything at all, without a special (and very expensive) license. Still, cast nets were readily available at just about every bait store, and sold well. I could never really believe that people were willing to spend several times over the annual fishing license fee to catch shiners for bait.

Or get a cheap ass boat, problem solved. An 8 ft $100 jon boat off craigslist with a few small mods can be an amazing fishing boat especially if you throw a motor on it. I use Lews lfs speed spools which get the job done for me. They're usually around $100, but Dicks Sporting Goods is selling them for $80 right now. The action of the rod plays a bigger part in casting lighter lures, but once dialed in, the Lews perform very well. I can cast a weightless t-rigged senko knockoff pretty damn far, even with a 7ft medium-heavy action rod though, but you definitely need to practice. If you use braid as I do, spool it with nothing less than 50 lb test. You'll thank me when picking out the inevitable birds nest. I used to use 20 lb braid, but I got a bird's nest so bad once I had to cut off half of it.

You can fly fish in lakes. I recommend using shorter leaders, intermediate lines, and streamers like wooly buggers. If you do plan on using a floating line stick with nymphs, emergers, or shit like squirmy worm patterns. Pick up a fly rod. It'll be fun. Besides, you can always make an excuse to drive to another part of the state since you'll be living there now.

In smaller countries (especially central EU) fish population is regulated by the local gov, they set out fish that feel comfortable here and leave it to hunters to catch them again.

Thanks! I purchased the spoon blanks from lure parts online, and then assembled them myself. In my state, a company sells pretty much the exact spoon for 15$, so I was like fuck that. For about 20$ for the spoon blanks and parts I was able to make 5 spoons.

Got my 7’2 exage rod for kayak fishing in the bay. I got it for $80 plus tax from dsg so not so bad. I have no baitcaster to pair it up for now so I just pair it with a curado 301e from another combo. The reel is a bit overweight for the rod but it’s not bad. When the holiday comes, i will get a 200 baitcaster size rated for saltwater to pair with it. There are a few options between tranx 200, daiwa coastal 200, komodo ss200, and revo4 inshore. I lean heavily toward tranx because I’m a shillmano fag but I also would like to see the review to come in first. Shit is sold out at every place online so a review has to drop eventually.

fishing for carp most weekends i use a 15lb mono mainline to a 20lb flouro leader (inline) with a ronnie rig setup (size 6 korda wide gape on a swivel, covered with shrink tube). with this setup i fish boilies or meat on the boilie screw with a PVA bag of particle mix consisting of koi pellets (4mm) crushed boilies (whatever im using for the day), hemp, and a tin of sweetcorn, works wonders.

as an added extra i mix up some glug out of glycerine, food colouring and food flavourings...my current salted caramel is working great, also leave my boilies soaked in it for 24hrs +.

try floating bait off the top on warm days, just adjust your rig to suit. carp love dog buiscuits and bread flake.
