Ok I'm looking for a new torch here's my criteria

I have a head torch and gas lantern for my main light sources, but I need something extra with a little punch and throw if I need to spot something at night

I had a recoil Cree ultrafire which was amazing but I need something that runs off aaa batteries

Good luck finding a bright thrower that runs on AAA's I suggest you get a battery charger that can handle multiple battery types and just going with li-ion for your main torch.

Flashlights that run off of 1 18650 battery can use 3 AAAs. You need the AAA adapter though.

I bought from ebay, and a flashlight came with an adapter for AAA. Just dont get one to powerful.

Well, I personally have a sunwayman v20c and M11R and I love them both. I just got some new batteries for my v20c (AW 3100mAH) Which lets me throw 428 lumens for a solid 3 hours. On one battery. Very happy with the results.
I also bought a battery charger that lets me charge AA's AAA's as well as lithium ion cells all in the same charger, It has been working well for me so far.

It's just that my head torch runs on aaa batteries and if for whatever reason I need to swap my last batteries out of that into the thrower , possibly for strobe mode if I need to attract attention?

But if I can carry 2-3 fully charged decent 18650 and get 8-9 hours on full power that's good enough for me so ill probs do that

This is now a 18650 reccomendation thread for this torch

I would get away from from the compound reflectors those use, There is much better technology out there. Check out O-light, they make some really good throwers. You want a deep reflector and a small emitter.
Check out candlepower forums for some reviews.

Just out of interest why no love for the recoil ? Out of the 3-4 cree torches ive owned this throws waay further with a nice tight spot .

Im worried about the heat sinking capability of having it mounted like that, I checked out a review of that light you posted in the op at candlepower forums and the beam-shot is really dirty and artifacted in comparison to typical setup.
It does make the light look neat tho. If you are actually interested in throw and do a little research on the forums you will find this is mostly just a gimmick and conventional design is superior.
again, Deep reflector, small core is what you want.
