First we have to wash and cut the roots to size. you want to get rid of enough of the outer bark, but don't scrape off too much of the inner bark

I ran out of coffee filters so had to improvise with some paper towel. You can clearly see the deep red color of the sassafras tea now

In case you don't know it, anon, the safrole in sassafras is carcinogenic. You really shouldn't be making tea from it. Though, I know it is damn tasty.

There's no strict recipe for root beer, other than it is being made from something that is a plant root for flavoring.

There's many plants that can make decent tea that contains carcinogens, common yarrow (Achillea millifolium) is one example. You should limit your intake and it's usually safer to use the leaves, not the roots. I will make tea from yarrow and sassafras but I won't do it more than a few times throughout a year because I can never find if these chemicals are fat or water soluble.

safrole is non-polar (fat soluble)
but you don't need to worry since boiling it destroys it anyways
