When you're hot you sit in the shade. Why wouldn't you put your whole house in the shade. If you have cool night's then you also want thermal mass inside your insulated envelope. Bring the cool air in at night so your walls get cold then shut the windows during the day so the hot air doesn't get in. The walls will stay cool all day.
The house in your pic is pretty bad. Tile roofs have thermal mass but being on the outside means it gets hot in the day and stay hot at night. A metal roof has very little thermal mass so gets hot in the day but cools down at night. The walls are also exposed to the sun. Which means they get hot in the daytime.
So biggest shadiest roof possible and good airflow at night.
