I'm doing Mt. Shasta next weekend, pretty excited as it's my first legit mountaineering experience.

General thread about 14+ ascents, glacier travel, crampons, self-arrest techniques, all that good stuff.

Also, pictures you have from your ascents/adventures, and any stories, cool, scary, etc.

Probably the most frightened I've ever been was on the North Face of Little Bear Peak. All incredibly sketchy/chossy 3rd and 4th class climbing. I did it in hiking boots with no rope or pro. Dumb as hell.

Spend a day or two in town (5000+ ft) before even attempting to hike that.

Elevation will kick your ass when you're used to sea level.

I'm actually taking three cameras - a point and shoot and a gopro for the summit, and a DSLR for the base camp/scenery shots.

Bought some boots, scarpa charmoz gtx, hope they fit well.

I am in decent shape, ride my bike everyday, run a few times a week. Did the 8000meter challenge back in september (39 miles 3 peaks 24 hours).

Should be fun!

Based on the time of year that pic was taken you wouldn't have needed protection. At most, maybe a rope to rappel the bowling alley. I did Blanca solo a few years go when there was still quite a bit a snow around lake Como. It was mostly a snow climb above the waterfall. I stayed on top until the sun hit the slope good and probably got 1500' of nice glissade (at least).

I had to bail on Little Bear as I sat and listen to boulders come down the first chute to the ridge all night long - I saw one come down that would have turned a mini-cooper into a skateboard.

I'm going to be up that way next week but the wife and kid are with me. I may take the jeep up to Jaws one just to fart around but that's about it. I'll be climbing Wetterhorn the week after.

You haven't even worn your boots yet?

Prepare to be miserable. Mountaineering boots take a long time to break in, that's assuming they even fit you.

You should have been training in the boots two months ago.

This isn't like breaking in a pair of hiking boots, they can be cripplingly painful if they don't fit right.

Thanks for the concern, I have the same boot in two consecutive sizes, I've been wearing both pairs around my house to let them speak to me. I'm probably going to go for the bigger size, but I'll wait till I get back before I return the smaller size.

They fit pretty well, at first I thought they didn't but the more I wear them, the more ok they feel. I've never worn a boot with a full length shank so that's probably why they felt funky.

As far as them breaking in, it's mostly the boot molding to the shape of your foot, which absolutely does take time. So they won't be there yet by next weekend, but I won't be "miserable," hope not!

Do you mountaineer anon? Do you have pretty boots?

If you know how to fit the boot properly, it can be done. I climbed Mt. Ranier in a new pair of La Sportiva Trango's without a blister to speak of. The trick is knowing what kind of shape your foot is. I have a narrower heel/ankle, so I have to be aware of that when I fit boots. Lacing them up properly helps as well. Any heel movement is out, be prepared to use insoles or heel lifts to eliminate any extra space. The foot will swell a bit as the day goes on, but the length will remain consistent. Nothing sucks more than drilling through a blackened toenail to relieve the pressure from the swelling underneath.

Pro would not have done much good. At one point, I was standing on a fridge-sized boulder that came off the wall and tumbled down right after I moved off it. Shit like that happened constantly. I descended the standard route which was a total shitshow.

Have fun man. I live on the east coast now and miss that shit.
