But lets take a look at a standard .308 calibre in 150 grain vs a standard m1 carbine in 110 grain.
At 100 yards the m1 round has 600 ft/lbs of force. But the .308 has 2,138 ft/lbs of force.
At 200 yards the m1 round has 374ft/lbs, almost half of the 100 yard range. The .308 has 1,708ft/lbs of force.
I'm not even going to go into the bullet drop.
So is the M1 carbine round possible? yeah, at less than 100 yards. Is it ethical? no.
