Virginia George Washington National Forest

The good.
Plenty of dispersed camping and hunting opportunities
The po po hardly bothers you. Have had them pull up on me piss drunk with a bottle of 151 in my hand and not say a word, just trying to find where the fireworks were coming from on a 4th of July weekend.
Land adjacent to the national forest is pretty cheap and they also don’t bother too many people making their own trails, shelters, etc. so long as they aren’t near any established trails.

The bad.
Fishing is minimal to stocked ponds and tiny creeks
Not allowed to camp by the water
No rivers for canoe or kayak trips where I can just pull off anywhere and camp for the night
AT and a bunch of other popular trails flood the forest with trash and noise every Summer.
Unless you’re on the AT, the only people you’ll run into are methheads and moonshiners.

I’d love to be able to move someplace else in the future with better fishing opportunities. Sadly all of that is east of Richmond. Considered moving closer to lake Moomaw but still no dispersed camping allowed along the lake.
