I’m gonna shill for these again since it has been some time. Culprit Incredi-Craws. Darker colors like Junebug manage to land me some nice largemouth even in the summer when nothing but dinks are biting.

There’s also the Incredi-Slim which is the same thing but the body is a little thinner. They’re harder to find but my Bass Pro has 2 or 3 colors of the Slims. I prefer those because they still have the dangly claws and antennae but the thinner body makes it easier for a reasonably sized hook to pop out and keep the bass on.

For what purpose though
One of the main advantage of casting rod is that the line pushes into the rod blank and causes less stress on the guides.
Also, casting would be retarded on the rod.

That sounds like summer for me too, aside from topwater. 30min before sunset to 30min after, that’s it. Only other way is to load up a craw with 1oz of weight and try to launch it into the deep end.

dude texas rig a senko onto a 4/0 EWG hook with a small tungsten weight on some 8lb mono. this will work on a 20 dollar walmart spinning combo. Its not fancy, but it will work in almost any conditions on any body of water. use green pump for clear water or junebug in dirty water. Cast it around structure or into grass. I'm telling you man this is foolproof. keep at it

So today I went carp fishing at the lake near my castle. After 2 hours of no bites and no more sweet corn I was about to call it quits... but then it came to me! I knelled down and scooped up some fresh goose poop that was laying on the ground and mushed it into a ball and attached it to my hair rig. 3 minutes go by and something slams my pole. After duking it out for 30 minutes I reeled in my first flathead (sucker weighed 24 lbs)! Don't doubt poop as bait, I'll be trying it out again tonight.

That is all in the bag, with me I also bring a cooler with ice and 2 rods that stay in the car.
Maybe it sounds like a lot but I usually fish quite stationary so I don't have to be carrying my bag all the time.

My bag right now:

Forceps
Pliers
Filet knife
Cut-resistant gloves
A 500ml screwtop container with ~20 assorted lures
A 500ml screwtop container with ~10 leaders, a spool of 30lb braid, and a bunch of jigheads
A ziplock with my fishing license and fishing regulations

Then I usually bring 1-2 rods, and a bucket for whatever I am keeping.

Got asked to leave my regular spot about a mile upstream from the dam in the national forest. They asked me to go to so and so lake because it was just stocked and is the designated fishing spot. Told them I don’t want to go there and they told me to leave anyways.

The fuck kind of bullshit is this country turning into. I pay for my fishing and national forest license. There are no prohibited signs anywhere around here. There are clearly defined blazed trails along the riverbank that lead to the so called stocked lake, which is basically a trout pond for kids and retards.

Happens every god damn fall and through Winter. They think everybody comes out here to catch their little dinky stocked trout program and want to hoard everybody together to make their jobs easier. Well fuck this shit.

This is really the only bag I use, I try to keep it as minimal as possible. I even modded the bag by removing the vertical straps that make that handle thing, too much unnecessary bulk for me.

Main compartment:
- Reel (with nanofil mainline pre-tied to a quick change bead for easy leader change)
- Case with pre-tied leaders
- Small plano box for weights, spare hooks, and tiny lures
- Small fluoro spool in case I need to make a leader

Side pouches:
-Flood light, Sun screen, and any misc. items (keys and wallet sometimes) on right pouch
-Gulp 1in Minnow jar and Trout Dough jar on left pouch

Front pouch:
-Rapala fishing forceps (i clamp them to the shoulder strap while fishing)
-Tamiya hobby tweezer for getting size 26 midge out of a baby blue gill's throat
-scissors

The only thing I carry on my hand is my 2-piece ultralight rod. Somehow I still feel like this is too much to carry. I've been theory crafting ways to carry an even smaller bag.

No, because you should replace them with pliers made by a tool company. Pick something made in USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, or UK.

I like Knipex and Kliens. You can replace that style of pliers for ~$30 and have a generational quality tool instead of fucking around with a tool you already know you can't trust.

I hate these things. The bass fucking ignore them but/because the bluegill blow them the fuck up every 5 seconds but are too small to actually get hooked. I've tried tying them to ride hook-up, hook-down, hell I even tied one on a double hook and had them going out the sides.

Meanwhile I can throw a number 8 parachute Adams and a bass will slurp it with decent frequency and the bluegill will actually get hooked on it if I want to do topwater, or I can throw a #6 or #8 wooly bugger and also get green sunfish.

I offered the Mexican guy a fish and he let me keep fishing.

It's really sad that those fines aren't enforced properly or they control, but it leads to nothing. Here in Germany, you usually go free of charge if caught for the first time without licence and people that were poaching immensely precious salmons from a reintroduction program, causing damages in the tenthousands weren't charged either. Normally I just take my little plano that fits in my pocket, whatever lures that coincide with the conditions for the day, and my multi tool.

I only bring my bag when I go with my buddy on his little river rat and I keep an extra reel for my two rods, first aid kid, 6lb mono for dinks and 40lb braid for catfish/carp, old rag, dip/cigars, multi tool/knife, extra hooks/lures/weights, baofang that I play the local classic rock station on (crack sip yup), and water/snacks.

Chartreuse is good for stained water that you need to be more visible in, I have a lot more confidence in going dark in those conditions personally but there are those that swear by chartreuse. Reds are typically used to imitate summer craws and can be really effective in waters where they are common. That's just my 2 cents from a bass fishing perspective

I got one from Amazon for $5. Might be made of laquered cardboard. Don't know, don't care. It works fine and if it breaks I'll get another. I put some running line off some old fly line and some tippet. Works great. Biggest I've caught so far on it has been a 13" smallmouth bass. Numerous rock bass and blue gills also.

Just fished a very high end lake. I parked outside of the gate of a very nice 2 million dollar home and fished on a very nice dock.

There were no no trespassing signs so I don't see anything wrong with what I did.

The land owner came outside screaming. Asking me to leave his property.

Shocked at how rude he was. I asked him if this was private property.

He said yes.

I told him there were no no trespassing signs so how could I have known?

Enraged he told me he was calling the cops.

As a precaution. I hopped off his dock into the lake, and inflated the one pull instant inflatable float tube I carry in my fishing vest.

In doing so I knocked over the 50lb bag of corn I was using to Chum this guy's lake into the water.

When the police arrived I informed them I was not on his property but was trapped and needed some sort of way to access public lands as his property surrounded this lake, but the water above the lakebed was public and I was just trying to get home.

The police asked the property owner if he had a public easement. He said no.

The police then gave him a ticket for entrapment on public lands.

I also caught 3 carp.

Casting from cluttered area is really different. I’m not confident to stand up and cast comfortably yet. Also, I keep forgetting that I don’t need to try to cast far as I’m on a kayak and I can just move closer.

We saw dozens of fish swim past us. Most of them were grouped up in pods, a few singles. Only managed to get one solid hookup but it screamed up river and around an exposed rock and snapped my before I could move. Disappointing but still fun.

Really didn’t enjoy seeing two older guys blatantly snagging fish right in front of us without any care. They had 3-4 big split shot 3/4 the way up their leaders and a bare hook on the end. Every time a pod would push up they would lob it right in the mix of them and start ripping it up and back. Game warden got a call but I have no idea if anything came of it. They were still there when we left so hopefully they got a visit.

I always overhead cast from shore. I cast better overhead. However, sitting low on the kayak does not allow me to overhead lob cast with plenty of line out all the time as I would catch on the other rod and stuffs behind me. Also, to cast left or right, I can’t just turn my whole body to cast and have cast unoptimal position.

Tenkara is a massive meme. At least here in the US. It's actually pretty useful in the trout streams in Japan. I also hear JDM tenkara rods are exceptionally better than the US made rods. I've definitely considered buying one to keep in my truck for panfish whenever I have a few free minutes and I pass by a decent looking pond. The way I understand it, faster action rods allow for more sensitivity and finesse and slow action rods are better for lobbing heavy baits since they'll accept load better, though this is only applicable on the higher end of 2- 6 ounces.

Pretty sure you can fight almost anything on any lb test line. I personally caught a fat catfish using that same nanofil line, frayed to hell, with 4lb fluoro leader.

You’ll run to situation when you lose a fish and will consider it. A big one can easily run to a rock or vegetation, wrap you up and cut the line off. I can use fairly light line on the sandy surf but when I start fishing at this one jetty inlet near a bridge, I went way up on my test line. A big fish can easily ride the current and go into the bridge pilllars and the best fishing is near the bridge. Also, heavy line makes landing fish easier and safer on the rocky shore. I can pull fishes away from structure and pull them toward where I want to land them and it’s easier to turn their head into the net. However, if your fishing spot allow plenty of spaces to play with the fishes and allow easy landing them you should be fine. However, if you explore a new spot with hard structures, you might run into problems.

For lines, braids are braids. Sure nanofil are advertised as not-braid but w/e. It’s priced closer to higher end braid so braids such as powerpro slick or suffix 832 probably has similiar performance. There might be minor performance difference in different area of casting distance, line strength, fray resistance, smoothness between popular braids in the same price bracket but it won’t be sunstential. Hydrofloat is a small step down from the price bracket so you might see some drop in performance. However, hydrofloat seems to be made specifically for fishing technique (float especially) so it might fill your niche. I don’t care much about picking line to specialized in a niche so it’s probably not my thing.

Fast Action: Finesse, bottom baits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, squarebills, topwater
Moderate Action: Crankbaits

5.0:1-5.9:1 is for crankbaits or slow rolling big spinnerbaits

6.0:1-6.9:1 is for spinnerbaits or squarebills

7.0:1-7.9:1 is for everything except super big crankbaits. Spinnerbaits, squarebills, topwater, jerkbaits, jigs, Texas rigs, etc.

8.0:1 and up is mostly reserved for jigs and Texas rigs.

Now the kicker? This is mostly personal preference. Everything I just said is my preference, so you might not give a damn

A 6.0 to 7.0 with fast action is probably a good multi purpose tool. That’s allI have so far and I haven’t gotten a specialized set up set. If you ever go up on baitcaster reel size pass 200, a 6.0 of the bigger reel will have faster line retrieve than a 6.0 of the smaller reel so you have to slow down to achieve the same retrieve speed. However, due to the bigger reel coming with a bigger gear, it’ll come with more power, especially with a bigger handle, so you end up with less resistance reeling in stuffs with a bigger reel compared to a smaller reel with an equivalent LINE RETRIEVE per turn.

They're saying they catch flathead catfish on beef liver (which is oddly difficult to find at grocery stores near me, but I digress; I'll probably use chicken liver). From what I've read, it's rare to catch a flathead on liver. But people say they have, though more often than not it's a bullhead or channel cat. Also, a lot of sites say that flathead catfish much prefer live bait, and at worst fresh cut bait to anything like liver.

I'll try my luck, probably in two weeks.

When I go out on my kayak again, I'll be planning on one of two routes. There's a river near me where I'll be putting in for the day. I can stay on the main river, or take the smaller river.

Just below where I put in is a dam, so I definitely cannot go down-stream from there -- it is also too shallow, rocky, and there are more small dams for a bit. This river used to be used for power generation, starting at that one dam, so obstructions abound.

Just above, a smaller river joins the larger.

Last week, I put in there for the first time, and traveled up-stream a couple miles on the main river, and about a half-mile on the smaller river.

My next trip, I intend to do one of the following:

Follow the main river up-stream until I reach a certain park, which is the next place where the shore is accessible. The distance is a little over six miles.

-or-
Follow the smaller river to the pool below a dam. The dam is the end of one of this area's major reservoirs, and that reservoir/lake is one of the best places for fishing -- except it's pay to play.

Both rivers are fairly well-populated with fish. I've seen several species, and I know of others people catch.

The river is not accessible to motor boats, at all.

Oh, one of the best things about these routes is that both are almost completely lined by dense forest the entire way. Except for the park, and paddling beneath bridges, I won't even see a sign of civilization until I reach the park, or the back side of a shopping center on my way to the reservoir dam.

There is literally no access to the bottom of the reservoir's dam, except to go up-stream to it. There are no places to put a proper boat in, and except for a couple shopping centers, there is nothing close -- residential or commercial -- along the way. That tells me it's not very pressured (there may be some trails a few people use to reach the river, but I'm sure if there are, it's not something more than a handful of people know about).

I expect a productive fishing trip if conditions are right for it.

imo the best way to start is to get the cheap ass "ready to fish" combo from walmart or something along those lines. it comes with all the basics to go after some panfish but you can absolutely tie on a nice finesse texas rig or wacky rig and start going after bass. I always recommend fishing yamasenko stick worms or berkely power worms to start with. green pumpkin in clear water black and blue in dirty water. just find a local municipal pond or something and get a line in the water, its the only way to learn.

Alright lads, went fishing to the beach (so cal) again today and this time I got 4 yellowin croakers and a mystery brown skin fish. Sadly I didn't take a picture of it. I gut hooked a croaker and while trying to get the hook out, I found out why they're called croakers. Couldn't salvage the hook so cut the line as much as I could and let it go.

This was my best outing to the beach yet. When I first started, I would catch nothing, then I'd catch just one the whole day. Now caught a whole lot!

Croakers school up and go on frenzy so if they run by or hang around your spot, you’ll get them back to back. For me. I took my kayak out today in harbor and did really well. I got 4 spotted bay bass and a halibut and a turbot. It’s the most I got so far in an outing out of 5 trips of kayak fishing I’ve done. The halibut was on a double hook up with a spotted bay bass as well.

You tend to get smaller croaker mixed in with big ones with gulp or sandcrabs but with bigger bait like spoon and LC, only big ones will take them if they are there and chasing baitfishes. At least you were kinda targetting the croakers with gulp since you mostly catch either croakers or perch with gulp sandworm. When I throw LC or spoon, especially when bait fishes are being chased, I usually try to go for halibut but the croakers are too aggressive and swarm my lure constantly. They give good fight for their size though. Getting big croakers are still better than getting the jack smelts and mackerels on the LC at least, or worse, snagging at big batray.

And that's the day that I learned not to buy cheap ass hooks. Granted, it was a size 6 hook as I was carp fishing and I definitely should have loosened up the drag a bit, but nonetheless I don't scrimp on hooks anymore. I'm not completely sure what it was, but I think it was a fuckhuge blue cat that picked it up as the lake I fish has a very good population of them.

Generally they don't go after tutti fruity boilies (though channel cats do), but it definitely didn't fight like a carp. Like it was pulling hella drag on the Daiwa Sealine spooled with braid that I was using so it must have been a pretty good size.

related is what I'd put to work over the last two days before I lost it to a snag along a canal. I caught sun fish, catfish, and the biggest shad along the creeks and rivers where I live. sun fish cant help but bite a 1/3 inch slice of night crawler on a hook jigged with or without a splitshot to help get down to the water layer you're targeting.

if your river is under high pressure from other pleb fishermen I'd recommend picking up fly fishing or just finding a new spot.

I was able to pull 8-10" yellow perch out of there till the last few trips. Skunked twice, and pulled a pair of dink rock bass out at the end of the trip the third time. It's been a bummer. The bass pond by me produces apparently, but I can't get it to work for me. I may try another spot that's faster-moving with deeper water. Not sure yet.

only ever caught one fish on one that I had cut down from 6 to about 4.5 inches. every other fish I've gotten on a "worm" pattern lure were super cheap finesse worms in bubblegum pink and brown/green or YUM! dingers in that off-watermelon color

even then, I've only gotten a handful of fish on worm pattern lures. most fish I get are on craws in natural, watermelon, or deep blue, swim baits like the powerbait sinking - swim baits in shad or natural green and in-line spinner baits / rooster tails with brass / gold leaves, and very small pieces of night crawler on hooks.

thats why I mentioned the casting bubble. Ive never used one personally so I dont know exactly how you rig them but I know people use them on conventional setups to throw smaller flies you otherwise wouldnt be able to cast.

If you really want to get better at trout fishing a river like that, a fly rod will definitely be the better option
