Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.
Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Prince Albert, Carter Hall or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $20.
Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try filling your pipe this way:

Only blends you particularly don't want to age too long are Latakia heavy blends and aromatics cause they lose their punch after long periods of aging, but there are some latakia blends where i find that aging does help out.

Dr. Grabow) for like $40, and they smoke perfectly fine. Sometimes the tobacconist (alternatively, Ebay) has decent no-name briars for as little as $20. >>1357321 It's the nature of smoking. It's never good for you. I've smoked cigarettes, and I'd say the pipe is about 1/10th as damaging, but you're still doing damage to your body.
I usually take a week or two off every couple of months so tongue and gums (the most affected areas) heal. I know I smoke far more than the majority of pipe smokers though.
I actually came here to post: one of my favourite parts smoking a pipe is how much it fucks with people minds. I started a new job recently and everytime we go for smoke break I bust out my pipe and just enjoy it and everyone either compliments me or wonders how I smoke a pipe. I've been at it for 2 years and learned how to smoke my pipe in the most convenient hassle-free way possible, even when I don't bring basics like a tamper. It's a genuine display showmanship on my part. I make it look almost as easy as pulling a cigarette out of a pack. Just pack light, light, and pick up whatever from where ever to tamp with. I've been using small acorns as tampers since it's fall.
I'm pretty sure this is how dedicated pipe smokers of the past smoked. They just kept their pipe, tobacco and a lighter on them.

First is that most modern corn varieties have cobs that are too small. MM had to develop their own variety to get cobs big enough for their pipes.
Second is that the cobs themselves are not very flame resistant at all. If you just rely on the cob itself for protection, it will burn through in just a smoke or two. You have to have some type of shield to keep the fire from the bottom. MM uses a hardwood stem whose shank covers almost the whole bottom of the bowl. As you smoke it the first time that stem chars, hardening and becoming fireproof. Made with the stem this way, a cob will last for decades.

Hey guys I'm Canadian specifically from around Lake Erie (Ontario). There's tobacco plantations that grow mostly cigarette tobacco (i.e. burleys, light smokes) that are meant to be rolled into roll-your-own cigarettes. I've been putting the tobacco in pipes and smoking it and it tastes good albeit burning quite fast (25 minute pipe vs an hour long pipe with "proper" pipe tobacco. I've been meaning to try rolling it into cigarettes and just puffing (not inhaling) the smoke if I'm on the go and want to enjoy the flavour of home-grown tobacco as well as offer some to my friends. I look up the health information for RYO tobacco and couldn't find anything in the slightest scientific. I found articles claiming it's as bad if not worst for that than regular cigarettes, and on top of that it contains even more chemicals than typical cigarette tobacco. I think these articles are incorrect. It depends on the specific kind of tobacco; I've grown up around this plant and I know the lady who farms and cures the shit. You open up the baggy the farmer gives me and it's just shredded ribbon-cut tobacco but with a bit smaller of a ribbon. No extra chemicals or anything, how can RYO cigarettes even be compared to regular cigarettes? Has anyone had any other experience? Are RYO cigarettes really worse for you than typical boxed cigarettes? Have you ever smoked rollie tobacco in a pipe?

I splurged on one of Peterson’s new Christmas pipes while I was in Dublin for work. I justified it to myself by virtue of them looking like they’re built to last. Thick walls, and a good nickel mount plated with copper - perfect for the potential drop while out. Since they’re army mount again this year, I’ve stuck a p-lip on it - half to try it, half to preserve the nice original stem in case I sell it at some point. They’re a fair bit more difficult to clench than fishtails, but as someone that uses the breath method to smoke I can see myself sticking with it. I also picked up some samples! So far I’ve only been through Sherlock Holmes and University flake, neither were phenomenal when sat next to my usual Germain blends. I was also intending to buy their 2018 Christmas blend, since they sell it in a large tin unmolested by government health warnings - but they didn’t have it in stock at the time.

Is it a really bad idea to pick up a used pipe if I have very little experience in pipe smoking? >>1363104 When buying estate pipes, check and see if theres any cracks in the bowl or around the shank. Look inside and see if there's still any cake inside. If there is, then it will have to be reamed to check for charring inside the bowl. If the pipe is well smoked, then there's a chance that it is a good pipe.
I have a few vintage estate pipes that look like they have never been cleaned before, and to be honest i'm kind of scared smoke them. So far they have undergone two Alcohol and salt soaks with heavy shank cleaning in between (cleaners coming out completely black and tarred every time), the some stems were completely blocked and so far they're in the 2nd alcohol bath as well. I think the final step is a alcohol retort and a final swabbing to get 98% of the previous owner's gunk out. Estate pipes are great and all but i get skeeved out thinking of someone else slobbering all over the stem and having it seep down into the shank.

Most of the cooties die off just by drying out, and the rest are either washed away thanks to their habitat being dissolved or murdered outright by the alcohol.
You’re actually pretty safe.
The bigger challenge is getting the fuckers all the way clean. Two things that helped me immensely were bristled pipe cleaners and a shank brush. Those do lots of the heavy lifting when it comes to cleaning out heavily soiled pipes.
Just put some alcohol in a small bowl, wet your shank brush and go to town. Every so often clean off your brush in the alcohol and keep going. When it comes out mostly clean, switch back to plain pipe cleaners and clean out the rest of the residues that way.
For the very worst, most plugged stems, you may have to resort to more radical methods to clean your airway. If it went even pass a pipe cleaner, you may have to resort to a drill bit. Take the very tiniest drill bit you can find, place it on the tar deposit and spin it between your fingers until either the mouthpiece is unblocked or you can’t go any deeper without either losing the drill bit or damaging the pipe.

nice little collection of pipes I have now. Only 3 of these are not from ebay. Most of the pipes to the left and right now heavy duty stem restoration. The ones with the stem halfway need beeswax which should be here soon. These took me over a week to (still cleaning some) get cleaned. Most looked like they've never seen a pipe cleaner. So far i've done heavy shank cleanings with the stems soaking in 91% ISO, and then afterwards the stems were cleaned out. Then 3 S&A soaks, followed by an alcohol retort until the alcohol is somewhat clear. I'm having a hard time with the oxidation removal off some of the stems, so i need to do more work on that. Oh and to top it off, the stems and shank get another cleaning to make sure most of the crap is out and then the pipes get to sit for a few days to dry off. If i suspect mold, then I will drip just enough alcohol into the bowl and shank to coat the sides and light on fire 1 or 2 times to kill the spores.
