Okay, I know this is nerdy, but I read it mentioned in another thread, saw the films recently and the whole thing got me thinking...

Is the (movies) Strider setup a viable ultralight camping option?

How would you replicate it?

Is Viggo just so cool that he could make an orange synthetic parka look cool?

Haven't seen the movies in a long time, but all I remember him having in terms of /out/ gear is his cloak, a knife, a bow, and whatever he used to start fires. Theoretically you could probably do pretty well with that setup as long as you have the means to keep sheltered and fed. Strider probably would've packed dried foods and hunted/foraged a lot of his meals, then for shelter he was probably used to sleeping in caves and hollowed out logs or whatever and wrapping up in his cloak.
So yeah, probably pretty doable irl if you don't mind having practically 0 comfort. Modernizing the gear would be pretty easy. His cloak and knife could be left the same since wool is such a GOAT material and knives haven't really changed much since medieval days except for having better materials now, his bow could be swapped out for a compact .223 or something, and his presumed tinder box could include modern fire starters and a lighter.

It seems that his kit consists of:

- Undershirt, shirt (cotton / linen), pants (cotton / linen?)
- A long leather coat (worn in the pic, taken on and off during the movies)
- A wool cloak with a hood, worn in cold or wet weather. (Folded in the pic)
- Fingerless gloves
- Light leather boots

Apart from this, you can see he is carrying a bow, plus an extra folded thing next to it (sort of sleeping pad or extra blanket?)

This, he would have to carry almost no food or water, so constant hunting / foraging would be a necessity. I find it cool how he doesn’t carry shit, while the hobbits take huge backpacks, frying pans and other creature comforts.

Do you think he could get away with this reliably in the conditions and climate he is shown to live in?

I think his profession before Lord of the Rings is ranging through the northern forests and protecting the shire and other places west of the mountains against raiding orcs and wolves. So they probably have stashes with food and places to stay at.

depends on where you /out/, as far as I know tolkien modeled middle earth on england and parts of europe. my guess is that strider was never more than 1/2 a day out of a town or hamlet. I would think though, here in a place like canada you would need more gear, I have traveled the distance of the northern most point of britain to the southern most point without seeing another human other than my traveling companion, not passing through a town, settlement or city, or leaving the province.

Nah, most settlements in the uk have been here since the middle ages, just far smaller. Bear in mind in preindustrial society the vast majority of people live rurally, not in cities and I'd say it's likelier than you think. At least, it isn't like he'd be trekking through unknown wilderness so much as stuff on the level of southern scotland today.

A modern ultralight quilt would probably be a much better choice than lugging around a thick heavy wool cloak that isn't waterproof and loses half its insulation when wet...

a proper wool coat (Loden) is waterproof on its own. More important, it's fireresistant. Since with such light gear, you're going to need a fire to stay warm at night, taking a synthetic, not fireresistant cloak instead would be stupid.

Looks like it's either a waterskin or a simple bag, probably the latter. It should fit enough base food (flour, smoked meat, salt) for three to five days and a water bottle.

You can also glue leather to the outside of your quiver for that authentic look and feel. Just don't forget to apply plenty of Sno-Seal if you do.

Here’s a list I was working on a few days ago

Ignore some of the retarded choices, I was going for a blend of ultralight, minimal volume, larpy ye olde shit too.

This is the crux of this thread, seeing as everything else in Strider’s gear can be achieved by lowering comfort, multipurposing etc.

I say carry an expandable bag, for example one of those French net shopping bags on your back, so that when you’re out of food you can roll it up and be practically packless like him. Someone critiqued my net backpack, but I use one occasionally under my poncho - which means it’s protected, very light and the food (wrapped in carrier bags) is only in there for a few days so durability is not an issue.

Poncho rolled up when not in use, cloak thrown back or horseshoe/civil war carried when too hot, shorts in hot weather.

All Black Errything like strider would be pretty useful for quick drying and stealth camping, but you wouldn’t want to drop any of your critical gear

Also, ignore the umbrella. I have that there because I like to do sketching outdoors even when it rains, also the down booties wouldn’t go well with the turnshoes - wool or gnaalbinding instead.
Lose the bronners, smaller battery pack, take a less gay and expensive phone
It’s not climbing rope, it’s meant to be the ridgeline for the trekking pole support
Stainless steel mug wouldn’t weigh much more and much cheaper (mine was half a dollar)
One mod for the silicon mug as a bottle/cold soak: add a disc of metal under the silicon lid to reduce the contact with the silicon and food/water, since silicon leeches especially with fatty foods and you don’t want dat dere extra silicon in your body

I chose an inflatable pad instead of foam for volume but you could skip the sit pad too.

Big disagree on going with the heavier, colder, less water resistant option just because it's fire resistant.

I would advise using a reflector and staying a little further back, and using something that locks in your body heat better.

A breathable synthetic quilt that insulates when wet will do you better than a fire when asleep in most situations anyway.

Have you ever used a wool cloak? those things are warm enough that even in -10°C, wearing nothing but a t-shirt and pants underneath I'm warm enough to sleep. Also, if the weave is right, they're waterproof enough. I wouldn't go diving in one, but it keeps out rain well enough.

Also, at least for me, it seems like I sweat way less in wool than in synthetics.

You'd be sleeping out under the stars with no more than perhaps a tree for some rain cover and wrapping up in your cloak. Basically, your camps would be shielded from winds if it were colder and with winds when warmer to deter biting insects.

There probably are realistic templates, look into/interview experienced bushcraft people

but the actor in LotR is just carrying props to make them look like they know what they're doing

Italian mountaineering team on the Breithorn came across him at 4000 meters. Apparently it's common to find unprepared morons up there because there's a cable car that can take you up most of the way, and it's morons like that which are getting the mountains changed to permit access only.

I saw a dude fall on a vertical part of a via ferrata in Austria a couple of months ago. We went over to help, organized a belay, etc. Luckily he wasn't hurt due to that section having a vertical incline.
Turned out the guy decided to go to a ferrta together with his wife for the first time, having some minimal gym climbing experience. On a route with sections with highest difficulty rating. Facepalm.
Equipment was rented, but they didn't even give him gloves, we had to lend him some. He was climbing in thin button-up shirt and rolled up jeans. Like, what the fuck.

But the fun part was actually what happened next. There were two main parts to the route, with a horizontal walk in between. We helped him to get to the end of the first part, and they were clearly in no shape to continue the ferrata route. The guide map had no indication of any path you could descend, so they decided to go down on a 45 degree slope back towards the start. The problem was that we were pretty sure that the slope ended in a steep mountainside that you can't walk down easily. They decided to go anyway.

I'm pretty sure they ended up calling the emergency services, because when my friends and I finished the route and were walking back, we've seen some people in red clothes walking up a mountain slope where those two were supposed to descend. And we passed a car with paramedic sign on in that was driving up. I was checking news for any accidents on that klettersteig for a couple of weeks afterwards, so it seems like they got out ok. But I'm sure they will think twice before attempting something like that again.
