One last thing OP, at least where we go camping, these signs are on most of the roads, so you better have a 4wd vehicle with good clearance. Bring some pieces of chain with you. If you get stuck, you can unroll chains in front of your tires and they will save your ass.

The tent is probably not the cause of being cold.
Look at a pad with a better R rating as you are probably losing a lot of heat into the ground.
Also make sure your sleeping bag and baselayers are sufficient

Depends how cold it gets. If we are talking negatives you might want a better tent for long periods.
I've been in subzero for a couple days in just a leantoo with ground mat and wind guard and it's not exactly comfy but i slept fully clothed and doubled up on socks with no problems.

I'm gonna be hiking in northern wisconsin, near greenbay so its gonna get pretty cold. I expect negatives and lots of wind.

Try to park yourself near some large boulders or next to a lot of trees, it breaks the wind a bit and make sure they are alive, as dead trees can break and branches may rain down on you causing injury or even bigger problems. Pine branches help for ground coverage and separate you from the cold earth or snow, put this under your tent with a tarp over them. Make sure you and your clothes are dry from the hike before you go to bed because youll be freezing. There's no easy way to escape the cold when it's windy but you can do many other things to help such as building a wind block out of stacked branches and surround your tent with them. It's timely but it does help a bit. I've been fine with just my tent before for a few days and being bundled up in a good sleeping bag. Can't say I've been to the great lakes area for camping, I've heard the worst.

It's basically just like regular camping except everything is harder.
Things will get wet, it's cold, if you don't know how to ski you're as fucked as the USMC on winter maneuvers against the armies of Sweden and Norway, you have to constantly dry clothes and shit, water is ice cold if you don't have it inside your jacket. Also your gun can freeze up and your boots will be frozen for the entire trip if you don't keep them aptly warm. Still worth it for the views and the quiet.

We had stoves in our tents with a stove guard who was one of us and each of us.
Otherwise it would have been a no way to spend a week in a -30 °C Lappland forests.

We chopped our own fuel for the stove. We were allowed to estimate our own fuel consumption for those nights. We underestimated our fuel need about threefold for the first night.

Ok. Any two pieces of tarp/canvas/sheet/whatnot needs to be angled and overlapped enough so that the falling water doesn't drip in the shelter.

So yes, those are good if you know how to set them up.

Use readily waterproof fabric on top of everything.

There are these grease products both commercial and diy. They tend to stain the rest of your kit, they may become a fire hazard and may contaminate your food products. I don't recommend those.

Like said, use something readily waterproof (and light weight).

Seems counter intuitive to me, to use tarps as shelter and still have to cover them with another thinner tarp

Doggo is old enough to come out overnight innawoods with me now, is there any precautions or essentials to take for him if I'm camping in negative numbers? Not one of those people that thinks dogs need their own gear but I was thinking at very least a small thick blanket just for him during winter
