Merchant ships normally just sail in between a handful of harbours. You'll be 'visiting' the same handful of countries all the time

Yacht Delivery is a pretty /out/ career. It can run between a full 4 man professional crew to a solo delivery. I met a guy in Australia who did it, he'd be flown out to wherever the yacht was, sign the papers, load up supplies and such then sail away. He often did it with another guy but sometimes solo.

Yes looking at the open ocean is beautiful... for the first few days.

After a few months at sea it gets old fast.

Although sometimes you see dolphins and sunsets are fantastic and one time my ship hit a whale.

I don't know how well it paid, I guess it would depend on the yacht, the experience, the route and his negotiating ability. He has a small bush house in Tasmania, seems to survive ok, no idea what he's making, might not be much since it's a passion job? He took us around the south coast of Tasmania for a week (fully wild).

He was in the army but had a lot of sailing experience, no idea about that officer stuff.

You'll have to investigate for yourself.
