Hey /out/ists. I'm looking to go on a 42 week truck tour of Africa from London to Cairo. This is the tour: https://www.truckafrica.com/tour/london-to-cairo-trans. Any tips for spending nearly a year travelling Africa with a bunch of strangers?
I'm a 19 year old uni student from Australia. My dad did the same tour in the early 90s and said it changed his life.

Jesus christ anon. My gf recently did a 6 week tour of most of East Africa and was getting fed up by week 3.

What will you do if you decide you're bored or fed up part way through? If you hate the people you're with? You can't get your 10 grand back. This seems like a colossal waste of money and an enormous waste of a significant chunk of your lifespan. You can "do" Africa in far less than nearly a year.

My advice is to choose a far shorter tour if you want to see Africa, and spend the rest of your year on a more diverse set of activities and travels.

My parents met on a truck ride from London to Cape town in the 80s.

My dad reckoned he ended up doing half the drivers job because he was always either pissed or hungover. There is a photo of him welding the axel housing back together in some mud pit in Tanzania. He said he didn't mind because the other passengers were a bunch of poofs and when he was driving he didn't have to talk to them.

I second the idea of taking a shorter trip first and deciding afterwards wether you want to commit yourself that much. It could be great and lifechanging, but it also could be a really bad, expensive time.
