/out/, it's time for some LARPing.
I recently joined a group for some DnD game and I rolled a ranger. Which started me wondering: how would be a IRL ranger and what would be his equipment?
Imagine being the stereotype of the class: agile /out/ man who knows how to survive in nature given any situation and/or climate.
What would be your equipment? Animal companion is a bonus, of course.

No you should actually go larping, since you actually go outside when you larp. Sitting around a table playing d&d is not larping.

How did you find your DnD group?

You mean an IRL ranger like you’d find out there today? Someone who only wants the most practical equipment possible and doesn’t care about larping aesthetics? Probably similar to most modern hunters with either a crossbow or 308 or something, and probably some ULW camping gear. They’d absolutely be ULfags.

They would carry a very short list of gear, but probably more of a bushcrafting setup than ultralight. They'd prioritize durability and reparability over weight. Probably just a tarp for shelter. You got the weapons right.

Hopefully your dm is reasonable because you can be a real master of many things and be the group leader or critical dps.
It is as the other anons have said: light weight non metal armour, bow, short swords or daggers, axes, explosives even. Idk about what else you rolled and I haven't been playing in a while but you should have knowledge of field medicine. Keep rope on you as a ranger would be able to use it for many things.
You should be able to adopt to environments and have a good sense of how to conquer any terrain. You should know how to camouflage yourself without even thinking about it which would always get you stealth with advantage rolls, no argument there. I would argue also advantage rolls in attacks during night time settings because you should know how to track or find silhouettes. Set traps around your camp to prevent sneak attacks.
I hate to meme here but when I think of a ranger as a d&d character I don't see Aragon but rather Daryl from the walking dead.

Want to know what a modern day ranger looks like? Look into long distance hunting. Pic related, it's Mark Seacat and Adam Foss, long distance hunters. Hunt with a bow and hike out their kill.

I like it, despite what /tg/ says it's a good edition to play with friends and if you are in good company it's really fun.
Lately we started using the darker dungeon homebrew ruleset to make it more grounded and "realistic" and the ranger, being able to scavenge and hunt for food/water probably becomes the key character of the party

I think that poster means ultralight meaning as lightweight as the situation allows, as a principle rather than an arbitrary weight limit. Personally I disagree though, I think they would use slightly heavier but more durable equipment since they're in innawoods for so long.
