I went on my first real hike up a mountain and felt shortness of breath, I didn’t even make it halfways. I want to know if this is due to me being out of shape and extremely inexperienced or if I have possible heart or breathing problems

They aren't, but they can make walking easier. You use your upper body as well. And they're great for not fucking up your knees when walking downhill.

I've never vomited before, but I know people who have pushed so hard they did vomit. I'v certainly felt like it, but I'm not the vomiting type and didn't. However, I was running up a mountain and my heart rate was nearing 200bpm when I got to the stop. I ran a tremendous amount back then and it was difficult to get my heart rate up because the hills were too short. My bpm was normally maxed at 110 with hills. But, damn, when I tackled the mountain it was amazing. I ran from bottom to top without stopping. It felt like I was floating and buzzing when I reached the top and my mouth kept drooling like a French mastiff. I don't recommend doing that.

Yes.

Go hiking on flatter terrain if you are too fat and weak for mountains. No shame in it. You will get better at it over time.

Well, if you see it as some kind of competitive sport and you only care about getting as far and as quickly as possible, then yes. They will improve your performance a lot.

But is it still hiking? It's a different movement set and the poles are somewhat of a "crutch" when it comes to footing and balance. They make it way easier, but they also prevent you from getting really good at balancing and footing.

In really difficult terrain I would always use at least a hiking stick though. There is no point in breaking your neck for no reason when there are tools that make it easier like poles or hiking sticks.

While backpacking or hiking on steep/treacherous hiking poles are invaluable, 2 legs good, 4 legs better, simple as.

On flatter terrain without a pack they are still helpful and can increase your speed and lessen the load on your knees, but you won't notice a huge difference in that scenario

I've lived in the mountains my entire life and I still get shortness of breath every time I hike this one specific trail, it has 4,000 ft vertical elevation gain in just the first 6 miles of the trail, starting elevation is 4,500ft then goes to 8,500 ft ASL (where I live the air is 27% thinner at 8,500 ft and 15C temp than at sea level at the same temperature). You gradually get better with experience though, even if you're not in the best of shape.

Low stamina. You need endurance training from running or other long term low intensity training.

Easiest thing is to run the C25K program. You'll build up stamina and make a big difference.

Feels good man. I legitimately enjoy walking, and having half as many cars to maintain, fuel and pay parking for is great for saving dosh. I think years of cold mornings and evenings in winter has conditioned me to the cold a bit too, because while everyone in our old cold shop was complaining about how chilly it was I was fairly comfy.

Not everyone's disposition to addiction is the same. I used to smoke every few months with only minor cravings for the first week or so of whenever I stopped, now I don't except maybe once or twice a year. Doesn't mean that it applies to everyone.

I find that people who've lived at sea level their entire lives start to get shortness of breath and other slight symptoms of altitude related acclimatization effects at around even just 8,000ft-9,000ft (2400-2700m), but you can acclimatize to it in just a few days at that elevation.

I've lived between 1,100 ft and 7,000 ft ASL in my life and after living at 7,100ft for several years in AZ I went back down to the low valleys and found I had to re-acclimatize to the low elevation and hot stuffy air for a few days, so it can go two ways sometimes. Not as bad as bringing a Sherpa that lived at 14k ft their whole life down to sea level, but it still can effect you although some people are effected by it more than others.

Shit then I know what my problem was then. I'm from fucking BELOW sea level and I'm now living at about 5,000 ft in Utah and was also trying to hike what is apparently known as a hard hike when I was expecting it to be moderate.

One of the major causes of altitute sickness is dehydration. Drink plenty of water the day before and tduring the day hike.

Also if possible, sleep a night somewhere at 5000-10000 ft before the ascent to acclimate.

To really help, do regular running or aerobic training to increase your stamina and endurance.

When you ascent, maybe take a 30 minute break at 10,000-12,000 ft to let your body adjust to the thinner air.

I knew three co -workers who quit. they just threw out anything related to smoking and convinced themselves that they don't smoke and that the cravings were for smoothies.

All three wound up losing weight too. Although on guy ate nothing but smoothies and fruit and now hes got diabetes.
