Catch and release fishermen of /out/, what do you do when you hook a fish in a way that there's no unhooking it while it's alive?

I was fishing for bass yesterday with a 1/6 oz Gitzit spinner. Pretty decent day, maybe 4 LMB in an hour. Got my 5th fish, which was a lot smaller than all the other ones. Couldn't have been more than 1/6 lb. The thing is, it took the hook pretty deep, into that sphincter thing in it's throat, and when I set the hook I buried the treble into it. There's no freeing it without ripping out it's throat, and it can't really eat because it's throat is stapled shut.

I ended up just bashing it on the head. Better than starving on the bottom of the lake.
