I used to not understand why people wanted to go /out/ and camping. When I was young, my dad would try to get me to do the whole camping out in the back yard thing and I'd always end up going inside and going to my own bed, or going inside for the bathroom and just hanging out inside.
Within the past couple years though, I've been wanting to be outside more, do more activities outdoors, and last weekend was my first ever camping experience, at 30 years old, and I loved it! Being able to just sit around and do... nothing was awesome. The only electronics we had were lanterns, and we did listen to music on and off. but 3 days of hanging out in front of a fire, swimming, a little reading, a few card games, and cooking with an open flame was FUCKING AWESOME! I felt so better 'detoxing' from constantly staring at a computer screen, or cell phone. Other than queuing up music, I didn't miss it one bit.
It is one hobby that I will be for sure investing in, I'm not looking to be all extreme (I survive on yak piss and a squirrel rib I carved into a knife, but at least just enjoy my time outside, watch the sun go down / up over the great lakes, etc.
