You either have to pitch up nightly eat when you going to work or bring food supplies, which will be 10 x cheaper.
Look for a natural structure of rock that provides shelter then pitch up your tent/base around there. Have 2 large cheap barrels to store food in. Purchase large bags of pasta and rice, really cheap. Get some egg powder. Possibly few cans of corned beef. Water filter. Cooking utensils.
The whole of the above should be less than $50.
I did that for 6 months. Was comfy eating and being healthy. Not easy though, showering, tv, computer etc.
Of course learn the wildlife.
No you can't plant seeds and grow food or whatever, that isn't realistic if you are not really experienced in all of that. Fresh veggies are cheap, much less effort to purchase them.
So as long as you know what wildlife is there and remain relatively close to a town or city you wont die.
people die when they go 4 hours into the wilderness, expect to live off the land "rabbits and growing my own food" and pretty much want to try and never come into contact with society. Oh and those that go into bear or dangerous animal land.
Go for the Walden approach.
