Has anyone here ever climbed Mt Everest or any harder mountain? Do you recommend it? I'm thinking about starting to train but I don't want to waste years for something so dangerous and not even get anything out of it.

By all means get into mountaineering, but remember every major wonder of the world has become a kitschy, over-developed emotional gut-punch. Dont get your hopes up and you can still enjoy yourself tho

Mountain hiking under 3k is more scenic anyway. People tend to forget that around 3k mountains very rapidly turn into monotonous piles of rocks and absolutely nothing else, only increasing amounts of snow at higher altitude. Unless you really love rocks and snow, mountaineering above 3k is a meme.

Just so you know, you need a permit to climb Everest and at the minimum its $25k. The average climber spends about $75-100k.

I've been over 5000m in Nepal, and up to 5200m on Denali.

Generally speaking, big mountain climbing is a social experience. You're going to be with a group, or there will be other groups on the mountain that you will interact with.

It's a good experience, but personally I get much more out of solo / small group trips, even if it means low elevation. I had been planning to progress up to Everest, but at this stage I likely won't. I don't chase token status/achievements as much as I am interested in the experience itself.

Climbing Everest is probably hard but I am sure it's far from the most difficult of physical feats. You'll have sherpas giving you oxygen and carrying your shit anyways. I would be more concerned with finding the money for it. You probably need close to $100k if you aren't a native

Diemberger means "from Diemberg", with Diemberg probably referring to a place which itself may be named after a "Diem mountain". God knows what Diem is supposed to mean, most place names are centuries old.

Nepal was a letdown for me. Too many tourists, abysmal infrastructure, and expensive permits. Everest just aint worth it imo.

Do Aconcagua for your first ultra. 6,960m and at the right time of year can be walked up without ropes or crampons.

There are far harder mountains than Everest, if by hard you mean technical climbing difficulties.

Sure, the oxygen issue is not that widespread on most of other mountains, but is not a technical challenge "per se".

Heck I bet that the Cervino is far tougher than the Everest, I sure found it pretty challenging and sometimes nervewracking

As for reccomendations. Start with smaller peaks first, attend some courses etc. and you'll se whether you're getting anything out of it. The more you're into it the higher you'll climb anyway

You seems to be under the impression that Everest has only one ascent route. There are over 20 routes that virtually never see any climbers. Its direttissima on the Kangshung face and the East "Fantasy" Ridge remain unclimbed. The fact that you dont seem to be aware of this leads me to believe you've never actually seriously considered climbing Everest.

You seem to be under the impression that Everest has only one ascent route. There are over 20 routes most of which rarely see any climbers. Its direttissima on the Kangshung face and the East "Fantasy" Ridge still remain unclimbed. The fact that you don't seem to be aware of any of this leads me to believe you've never actually seriously considered climbing Everest.

Probably better to just climb a big mountain with a respirator and lugging bricks to get the same experience.

of course but I don't think that OP was talking about alpine style non standard routes, because those are serious challenges and nobody on this site has the skills to do them.

havig said that, since I was comparing the standard touristy ascension to everest to other routes of the Matterhorn, I restate my position that even the matterhorn has more difficult routes than everest.
