Not a lot to tell really. I was going to hike Fiery Gizzard trail to the camp sites, spend the night, then hike back to my truck. I took some "advice" I picked up here and brought scotch. Started sipping and next thing I know was in big trouble.

I don't know anyone else who goes /out/ so I don't really have anyone else to ask.

Also the idea of being in the woods at night scared me which is why I started on the scotch. Seeing the sun going down and knowing you are far enough /out/ that you will be there when it gets dark even if you head back is pretty tough.

Get a good alcohol for while you're /out/.... just not too good. You want it to last your entire /out/ing, and you don't want to be too drunk to get where you're going.

Well /out/ is actually rather useful but being under the influence in a stressful situation that you're not familiar with is not the best option. Drunk people feel more courageous but it's more an illusion than anything else. Depending on the level of drunkenness it could end really bad.

Yeah this is real, especially when you only planned for a day hike. Building a fire helps too.

I made it most of the way to the campsites before things went bad. On the part of the trail that is like a 1.5 mile rock/boulder field I was too drunk to follow the markers and lost the way. Kept going and going and fell down a rock slide, then down an embankment into a creek.

So I climbed as best I could and just slept there for a little. Woke up in the night still pretty tispy and freaked out and left some of my stuff. Fell down a few times and was pretty cut up on my hands and legs.

So when I realized I could not find the trail and had no gear to overnight I called 911. It took like 20 tries I had to keep climbing up. I never talked to the people there but some hours later at like 4AM a park ranger found me.

Your story has a humorous feel to it from a stranger's perspective, but it's actually kind of horrifying when I put myself in your shoes. Horrifying because I know I'd get that courage to go night hiking and get lost as fuck and not even care, just keep trekking because you just KNOW camp is right around this bend in the mountain.

The cost to rescue me wasn’t really that much I don’t think. Just a couple of park rangers spending part of their day looking for me instead of bird watching or whatever else they do.
And as far as new laws i don’t think there will be any because of this.
