>>143915>Do any of you gardenfags live off your gardens?I do. I'm up around 1,000lbs of produce per year. It gets eaten fresh, canned, and preserved in several ways. I still have cornmeal/masa from last season that I use to make several dishes.
>>143913I had to wait until the corn can withstand me walking on their roots. The rows are very close together. If the weeds are overtaking the corn, I'll weed, because there won't be any need to weed if the corn is higher than the weeds. Plus, those "weeds" are also food; potatoes and lamb's quarter.
>>143917You'd be surprised how little land you really need to grow enough food to survive on. Look into vertical gardening systems like "Garden Tower Project". I'm actually going to be making one of those systems as soon as the heat gun I ordered from HFT arrives. Pic will follow of course.
>>143919I grow on around 2 acres, but most of that is orchard trees and berry vines. I use very little gardening space for vegetables. Just for the garden itself, I think around $300, but that's for fencing and solar electric fence charger (raccoons and deer decimate things here.) That was many years ago. I save seeds, use lawn clippings, and manures for fertilizer. So, reoccurring costs are usually only new varieties of heirlooms I want to try. Time can be 100-400 hours per year. It really depends on too many factors.
>Would it be enough to substitute all your snacks? That depends on your tastes and what you grow, but generally yes.
>>143924Crab apple preserves is awesome. Crab apple wine/mead is awesome too. I'm hoping to make some crab apple mead this year from my tree. They are a pain to pick through because they are soooo tiny.
