Northern NH especially Coos County has land for dirt cheap along with ghost towns since all the industry up there shut down a long time ago and nothing ever grew back besides logging.
If you don't mind the lack of job oportunities or got it covered somehow then its the best place I can think of to live off the grid/homestead.
