Do you winter hike alone? I want to start but if you search spruce trap stories and videos it scares the crap out of me and I claustrophobic just thinking about it.

Probably going to do an easy hike and camp somewhere secluded this weekend. All the damn people spoil the popular areas.

Anyone ever done any camping on top of these mountains? Can you just go off the trail and set up some tents or hammocks?
Also any good swimming holes out that way?

I've hiked up Mt Moosilauke using the beaver brook trial I think. I'd compare that trail to a black diamond ski trail, probably.
We camped out 1/4 mile off the trail, fucking lovely. Heard something creeping around the site the second night. Rooted plants, and you could see marks on the tree we hung our food from. Really nice place.
Plan on going again one year, much better prepaired though, and probably on my own this time. Me and my wife separated, and that kid with the banjo was my sisters friend, who kind of drifts across the country.
I'd do it every year if I could/10. Maybe a different mountain next time.

I've only been to moosilauke, but the tops are were everybody congregates, so it wouldn't be ideal. And all of the available info for the area says you need to be a few hundred feet from working trails, and a few hundred feet from bodies of water too. Not like the rangers will be out there every day, but just to be safe, and respectful.
I'm not sure about swimming holes, but I can almost guarantee you theres a few good ones up there. Do a little research, and you'll find many stories. Try to follow and you might just find one.

If you're in designated wilderness, it's standard backcountry rules, you will find pre-established campsites, no camping above treeline.

normally yeah, but there's some nice /out/ists up in NH
stick to well-used and compacted trails if you're scared of spruce traps, never had a problem with one

Was weird climbing up in the wind the whole time, then clearing the summit and hitting the ridge and having it get so still, quiet enough to hear conversations from the next peak or a raven a couple thousand feet below.
