I hiked up Mt Moosilauke in NH with this kid who had a banjo with him. We ended up taking the toughest trail on the mountain, out of 11 I think. Parts of it you had to use the rebar they blasted into the rock to get up the 20 foot rock faces. Little rapids/river/mini waterfalls off to the right most of the time, 30 ft down on and off. Place was amazing.
That kid didn't wear his shoes either.
Once we made it up there, there was at least 80 other people.
That kid was the center of attention up there next to that monument. And the sound. Well..

How about ocarinas? A decent quality plastic one is cheap, small, virtually indestructible, waterproof, easy-to-clean, fully chromatic, and can still give a nice tone. The sound also doesn't carry all that far which is a plus unless you want to piss people off in the next county, in which case you'd be bringing bagpipes or something anyway.
