Is walking coast to coast across America a meme? Is it reasonable? How much gear would you have to carry around? Has anyone tried it? What about going through all the continental States?

One backpack is reasonable. End of story. If you have enough gear for 3 days you have enough for eternity as long as you buy consumables and replace what gets broken. Three months is reasonable time without replacing any gear.
