Hats for summer hiking?

Hey /out/,

I'm looking for a brimmed hat to wear that's crushable and not too hot for desert hikes. I currently have a stiff and heavy leather hat (pic related, the same one) that gets a little too hot in the desert summer heat. I was thinking of a simple boonie cap being a replacement, any suggestions? Thanks guys!

I looked into Tilley hats and they seem pretty great, but they're a little too expensive for my current budget. I'll definitely consider it in the future, but need something at least half the price of a Tilley in the meantime.

My wife has a Kakadu hat that I got from Sierra Trading Post. It's a good hat, but the brim is a little too wide - I want to be able to move my head and look up with a pack on when scrambling.

I'm guessing that these sorts of hat either suit you or make you look like a dick. The only hat I can wear without looking too awful is a winter one with ear flaps.

It's more about comfort in the heat than anything else, although I will avoid something that makes me look like a poser moron. (fedora) I have a small head, so my wife's Kakadu fits me but it looks pretty bad. Also, when I have a beard my hat looks better - clean shaven and it doesn't quite look right.

Not OP, but I love those Aussie wide brimmed hats - they're like American cowboy hats, except made for actually being used, not just for looks - however, I can't wear them (or any other hat with a rear-extending stiff brim). My backpack, with foam sleeping pad packed on top, comes up behind my head and any stiff brim extending behind my head bumps into it and causes the hat to come unseated.

My solution last year was an OR Seattle Sombrero. Even though it's waterproof, it's not too hot in the sun. It's crushable, and the brim isn't very stiff, so when it bumps into my backpack behind me, no fucks are given. The problem is that in the wind, the front brim blows up and is completely useless, both for rain and for sun. And considering that it's anywhere from moderately to very windy >50% of the time when I go hiking (the Northern Rockies, and the Utah and Arizona deserts are my primary playgrounds), that was a big fail for the past couple years.

I'm thinking of something like pic related, but don't want to look like an old lady out working in her vegetable garden. I need to get the sun off my ears and neck, and want something more substantial than a bandana under a baseball cap.

OP here, seems like you've got a similar situation. I saw a fella hiking the Narrows trail in Zion a couple weeks ago with one of those hats in the pic and I thought it looked a little goofy. I'm sure it works great, but I would feel kinda dumb wearing one.

Looks like it says 50/50 Nylon Cotton (NYCO) and appears to be ripstop as well. I'll be heading to the local Army Navy Surplus soon to take a look; that's probably what I'll end up with.

Boonie hats are hot as well. There is a model made by Columbia (I think) that has mesh in it around the crown and is a lot cooler. You can also get a canvas hat and keep it wet (requires extra water or local water features.

The ideal hat for arid, hot environments has already been developed and meets all of your requirements except for crushable (arguable I know). There is a reason people who work outside dress a certain way for the area they live in. Pic related.

I figured I could put some velcro and a sweatband on the inside of the crown on a boonie, and buy one a little loose for my head in case it shrinks with time. Also, anything would be cooler on my head than the black leather non-ventilated cowboy hat I've got now.

Check out the Columbia bora bora boonie before you buy, it is superior in every way to a military surplus boonie. It's lighter, cooler, and has a wider brim. I've worn both and have to say the Columbia is a lot better.

I would say that a typical trip for me is anywhere from 40% under the cover of trees, and 60% above treeline to 70% under the trees and 30% above treeline - depending on location. Something like that would be pointless and needlessly uncomfortable most of the time.

Not him. I'm >>136267 and I don't want to freeze my ass off. I wear a hat to protect my skin from the sun at high elevation. Temperatures in the shade at 10,000 feet can dip into the 50s in the middle of the day in the summer.

Someone once said on /out/ he had one of these.

At first, everyone laughed. Then he mentioned that it actually protects from sun and rain, and is also light and cheap. There's surely a reason why rice farmers all wear these after all.

I've since gotten one, and despite being a little shy about wearing it, I have to say, it's the best hat ever.

I've used one of these for a number of /out/ situations. My only complaints are that they're incredibly susceptible to being swept of my head by wind, I find the chin strap uncomfortable, and storing/transporting them in a car or not on your head is difficult. They're really solid hats otherwise, and as you said, cheap as dirt.

I couldn't explain how it works, but I can tell you, it works. I've been numerous times in the Sahara desert, and it really protects you from sun, prevents you from eating and breathing sand, and you don't feel warm at all, it's actually much warmer without, which means it works.

I've tried plenty hats, but this is definitely the best one.

Done it. It's not perfect for a variety of reasons.
1. the hat must be quite tight on your head to keep the bandana underneath and not come off in a wind
2. the bandana, being lightweight, can get disoriented in wind or on its own, and leave part of your neck or face uncovered
3. in a steady wind, this will happen and there's nothing you can do about it

I'm currently staying in Grand Junction, Colorado. It's a pretty centralized location as far as access to National Parks go. I really like Hurricane, Utah. (St. George and Cedar City are a little too hustle and bustle for me)

When I did the Narrows, I started from the Temple of Sinawava and turned back at Orderville. Next time I'll go from the top down and do the whole thing.

Well then you may want to try another one. I'm not really into chinese hats, but I've noticed there were many, many different kinds, starting with halloween grade ones which are complete shit and barely designed to be worn, and good ones which may be a bit hard to find.

Some have one chin strap attached to the sides, some have one chin strap attached to the center, some have two crossed straps that make it hold really well on your head, then there are different kind of straps, some are made of small cord, some of thick and comfy fabric, some have a small fabric cap inside so you can simply fit it on your head without even needing a chin strap...

I myself have one with two straps, which are comfy, and wind can't touch dat.
