Will be there for 1 month, traveling for the first time from Vermont to my late father's hometown of York. I've heard and read nice things about the following places:
>Yorkshire
>Cumbria
>Northumberland
>Kent
>Surrey
>Dorset
>Cotswolds

What are your experiences? Any other recommendations?

All the places you’ve mentioned are good, though some are a little built up. Cornwall is nice too.

Don’t restrict yourself to England though - there’s lots of great /out/ in Wales and Scotland as well. You could add Snowdonia, the Pembrokeshire coast, and the Scottish highlights & islands to your list.

Also, my deepest condolences for your father.

The Highlands go far far beyond any semblance of /out/ you could get in England. But if you want to stick south of the border you can’t go wrong with the Lake District. That’s probably the best England has to offer.

York is my favourite city (apart from my home city of course). I stay there for a couple of days about twice a year. Beautiful all year round. Youll get some great photos. Try to book the jorvik viking centre if you have an hour or two spare. Pic related is york minster.

York is gorgeous. I've got a massive soft sport for the North Yorkshire Moors. North and west Dorset are comfy but cliff walking's always a good shout in the summer. Pic sorta related.

Do the coast to cost walk: it goes through three of the counties you're visiting and through the Yorkshire dales. Very nice. The Cotswolds way is quite nice but the 15 miles around Cheltenham and Gloucester is disgusting but the rest of it makes up for that.
