Carry a weapon if you need a weapon. Buying a heavy ass flashlight is a waste of space and weight.
Check out fenix, four sevens, o light, sunwayman, nitecore, zebralight.
Self built on youtube does very good flashlight reviews and does extensive writeups on each review at candlepower forums.
I have a sunwayman v20c and a m11r and love them both, If you need red light just stick a red gel circle to the front.

I'm gonna second fenix from personal experience. I don't like to support china, but that's a damn good flashlight. If you're going to choose a light to be a backup weapon, make sure you get something with a strike bezel and strobe settings. I don't have a sunwayman but I hear they're really really nice.

I'm a fan of the tailcap switch, more accessible when you're fiddling in the dark.
