Best handgun for /out/ stuff?

Criteria- something light, reliable, easy maintenance, can put down a cougar or a tweaker. Think backpacking in the west If you want to recommend something for bears feel free as well.

Don’t buy a Taurus. Now that that’s out of the way, I can personally recommend a Glock in 10mm, this is what I carry when out hunting in bear territory. Sometimes I will carry a .357 magnum revolver, ruger makes good revolvers.

Meh. Not to keep bumping a thread that doesn't belong, so I'm sage'ing in all fields, but I don't see a problem with Taurus for the beginners. They're reasonably priced, and hold up pretty well. I've had my judge basically since they first came out and the only issue I've ever had is that you have to be really picky about the .410 shells you use, because some of them like to get stuck. Otherwise the judge is a pretty versatile weapon that's easy to clean and will last a long while.

Though it's meme as fuck, and not the greatest, had he said rifle I'd have pointed him to the Scavenger 6, because it'll fire 21 different calibers and is as easy to clean as any revolver (because it is basically a revolver pistol with a long barrel and stock slapped on it) and you can order other calibers as long as they're smaller than .50, or order cylinder barrels that have just one caliber instead of having to load 6 different calibers in one CB. That does get really annoying, but it's great for scavenged ammo and easier to carry than 21 separate CBs.

Carry whatever quality 9mm you prefer (SigP320, VP9, Glock19, M&P9, PX4, FNS9, ect.). 15 rounds in a mag. Extra mag in your pack weighs fuckall should you need it.
These will handle anything that crosses your path on North America except maybe a big ass brown bear, and even then mag dumping in to it's face will likely get rid of one.

I mostly bowhunt, but when I have the need to carry a handgun, either for protection or to finish a wounded animal. I use my 1911. It is a bit big and heavy, but .45 is big enough for almost anything, and I shoot it well. I don't think 9mm is big enough at times.

I have hunted with and killed animals with this gun.

I know a good number of outdoorsmen who prefer a large caliber revolver. The longer barrel for a little more accuracy, and in most out uses, you don't need to be sending a lot of lead down range.

A lot of people are caught up in the idea of a bigger cartridge being better since they think it has the ability to put down larger animals with fewer shots (this is the primary argument I hear for carrying large caliber revolvers on hikes).
However, if we consider bears as the ultimate predator that would be chasing us (and for most of us, they are), there isn't much short of a 50 BMG that'll stop it in its place, and I doubt you are or wish you were carrying an anti-material rifle in your pack. That being said, the best strategy is to get as many shots on the bear in as short of a period of time as possible as to inflict the most damage possible before it reaches you. While additional stopping power is important, having a semi-automatic is a much more important aspect (take the case of the Alaskan fisherman who shot a bear dead with a 9mm).
Considering this, I would have to say a Glock 29 in 10mm or a good old 1911 in .45. If you're going for .45 and want more reliability, Sig Sauer has some pretty good options, but they're a bit bulkier.

When you hike long distances carrying a shotgun or rifle (and all the ammo you want) is just too much weight. People who are really serious about long distance hikes try to keep their base weight below ten pounds, so even carrying just a handgun is too much when you're lugging it over hundreds of miles.

My thinking was that you want to use either bear spray or a longarm, for the simple reason that you really don't want to shoot a bear and not incapacitate it, and handguns aren't good at instantly incapacitating things.

Basically, firearms create both a permanent cavity (the hole that the bullet leaves) and a temporary cavity (the much larger cavity that exists for a fraction of a second after the bullet hits.) Living tissues (with the exception of brain and liver tissue) generally aren't damaged by temporary cavitation as long as the speed that the tissue is moving is below a certain speed, because they can just move out of the way without tearing or breaking. Above that speed, things tend to break.

For this reason, guns that have a bullet velocity above around 2500 FPS and a lot of kinetic energy tend to create a trail of destruction within a body that's much, much larger than the trail of destruction left by a slower bullet, so pretty much all handgun rounds are much less reliable at incapacitating living things than rifles.

So if you're dealing with Polar Bears or some other creature that engages in predatory attacks against humans, something like 12 gauge slugs, a bolt action rifle in a belted magnum, or a semi-automatic .308 is going to be worth every ounce, and if you're dealing with something that will fuck off once it can't see, then it would be better to have spray for bears and a gun for people and smaller critters.

I carry a glock 19. Easy to conceal, holds 15 rounds, lightweight. I alternate grizzly +p jacketed hollowpoint and fmj in the magazine and feel pretty safe using it against anything other than a big grizzly bear.

When you want a round which possesses certain properties, you want *every* round in that mag to possess said properties. If, for instance, the task at hand is the neutralization of a mugger whilst avoiding overpenetration, you want JHPs, and you'd be foolish to put anything with radically differing penetration into the mix. Similarly, if you're attempting to stop a charging bear or boar, straight line penetration is the name of the game, and you would be grossly remiss to waste shots on JHPs which likely won't do shit to your current target. Having a Swiss Army mag may *sound* like a great idea, but ultimately it's self-defeating.

Unironically, the best woods gun is a Single Action Army clone in 45 Colt.

250gr at 1000FPS will put down any game / pissed off animal / tweaker in the lower 48. Single action so you have literally 0 chance of an ND or drop fire if you load keep the hammer down on an empty chamber. Retard proof design. Clean it with a fucking stick, torn up t-shirt, and walmart gun oil if you're a brainlet. You can get them factory cerakoted for around 350-400 bucks (Cimarron Big Iron).

Carry a glock 19 in the city, and a SAA in the woods. It's literally the best gun for someone who will do nothing but carry it for survival's sake.

inb4 fudd. I'm not, but a SAA in 45 Colt (or a Ruger Redhawk in 45 Colt if you must have a double action) is the goat woods gun.

Honorable mention to the Hi Point in 45 ACP for a literal "I don't look at this / take care of it/ do shit with it other than take it hiking" gun.

I worry a lot more about crackheads than I ever have about animals, I had a run in with a couple of them in an abandoned firetower a couple months ago. I was coming down and they were coming up to do drugs I guess, I found some needles up there. They had a knife and tried to hassle us, but they let us get down and go back to camp.

Some people (not myself) actually are in places where you have REAL dangers. Actual bears, moose, coyotes, wolf... etc. where you actually NEED to defend yourself when you are /out/... which is 100% OUT related.

That being said, I have a friend who is a park ranger in Alaska, she typically carries either a Colt Python, or a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 with her. or a glock in .45. As far as I know, shes never had to use it, but that is her choice weapons. Revolver for reliability, and .44 to make sure if she encounters anything she has to shoot.

I've got a big-ass 6-gun that throws .45 Colt. Like many said, most handgun calibers probably won't save your ass from a charging bear, but where I live, we don't have bears. I like the .45 Colt round since it has more umph than .45 Auto, but the size of the gun makes it very manageable. Plus, I can hunt with it, if I feel like it. Boars are the biggest issue out here, and javelinas (which always travel with more very angry javelinas) which will tear you apart if they get the chance. It's enough gun to be able to bring a few down, and cheap enough to target shoot with, if I get bored. Plus, it feels good to hum Marty Robbins tunes while sitting in the tall grass.

I would think a 1911 would be the right way to go. It's the AK of handguns, from what I've seen. Easy to find parts for, hard as fuck to break to even begin with. Designed to be effective as fuck. Adopted by the US military for decades as the standard sidearm. Variants are still used in many detachments, including special forces.

Not to defend Taurus in general or the Judge family in particular, but you really wouldn't want an airweight fo-fitty-fo dude. And for contrast, the Ruger Alaskan I'd probably go for if I were in the market (I'm not) weighs like 1.3 kilos. Significantly less, to be sure, but I suspect that much of that difference comes from Taurus trying to make a revolver to 410 bore dimensions *and* built to handle 454 pressures. Ruger, on the other hand, just built a 454 without a care for the 410 meme.

The US is estimated to have 40% of the guns in the world in private hands, which is probably low because of how little we regulate and keep track of these things, but you really believe "most people dont own guns" when all the evidence points to an absurd amount owning them in the first place, and more people who have never owned one getting them increasing every day.

So when you tell me "Most people dont own guns because X poll said they didnt!!" I tell you polls about sensitive subjects often arent reliable as evidenced by the current president.

I can only get a .380 in my country. Then again biggest realistic threat is coyotes/other people... and in theory mountain lions but I've never seen one in 30 years. .380 is good enough right anons?

S&W .357 with 5"+ barrel. You aren't trying to concealed carry, so size is not a problem. Six round capacity is fine for nearly every situation you might encounter. You don't want a snubnose barrel, or when you shoot .357 you're not getting the full advantage; you lose a ton of velocity by not having the extra couple of inches of barrel to complete the powder burn. You can use cheaper .38 for practice or for less recoil, and you can keep it loaded with hotter .357 rounds for large game or self defense. I've lived in gator country and heard northerners drone on about needing huge calibers for defense against gators while going /out/ in FL, but everyone in FL actually uses .22LR for gators, including those who get gator tags for hunting. Likewise, I've lived in grizzly territory and heard easterners talk about not going into the woods without being strapped with .500 S&W. Most people in grizz country are perfectly happy with .357 or at most .44, and that's usually more of a choice of their favorite firearm than the "necessity" for a certain caliber.

Remember that your single biggest risk is from other humans; you probably aren't being as vigilant about protecting yourself there as you should be. As for the wildlife, just get good with drawing your favorite firearm (be able to quickly hit a coffee can from 15 yards or so) and worry less about terminal ballistics.

The one practice I used to do that I thought was most useful was picking a sound I'd hear a few times a day - squirrel bark, a particular bird, whatever, and decide that every time I heard it I'd draw, locate, aim, and be ready to shoot as if it were a charging grizz. Having a couple extra seconds of drop is more valuable than any particular caliber. Give me ten seconds with a .22 and I'm happier than 2 seconds with a .44.

Now, on to rifle vs. handgun: a rifle is awesome to have, preferably semiauto and not bolt action. Biggest choice is .223 or .308, and that's application specific. For lighter weight, I'd go .223 most of the time. But even then, I'm not likely to be toting my AR-15 around at all times, whereas I may well keep an unobtrusive revolver on my belt all day. The best firearm is the one you have immediately accessible the moment you may need it.

The best gun is the one you're willing to carry and practice with. if you're going /out/ then choose something with a track record for working well with a bit of dirt in the action. Fights between caliber are a meme, you're more likely to need to use the thing against a crazed human than an animal depending on where you go. Anything above .380 is fine
