I think the last time you guys heard from me was before my wisdom tooth surgery two or so weeks back. Recovery from that was no pain, went back home for a few days for vicodin dreams on the couch and came back to the forest. The last few weeks have been unproductive and miserable. I've fallen on some hard times. For starters, my employer hired back a bunch of people and cut what already low hours I had prior. Then I started seeing forest rangers for the first time in the park, likely because of the start of summer. The real nail in the coffin was seeing forest utilities work trucks near two of the places where I usually park my car for access to the hole, and theres been no progress after that. As of right now, the interior framing of "fag end" has been finished and the only thing left to do is build an exterior frame and pile dirt over all of it, but I haven't touched. Been real depressed and extremely paranoid since all this. As an alternative option, or just for kicks, I also checked out a commune up by north that offers a program where you work and learn about farming in exchange for room and board. My problem with it is that I called up the guy that heads the operation and he comes across as a huge hippie narcissist, he made a bunch of weird comments making it sound like he believes he is the next reincarnation of Jesus or something. I'm still considering it though because beyond farming, the program teaches a lot of other homesteading skills like making fabric. Another option is perhaps relocating east towards Big Thicket or Sabine and starting over. To get my energy back I've been spending a lot of time at the SHSU library here reading up and researching stuff. Right now my agenda is looking for a new job and perhaps better routes to the hobbit hole.

Glad to see you're not dead, we actually had a thread asking if you were still alive. Sucks about your hobbit hole. Have you ever thought of getting out to someplace with BLM land? Might be less regulated than the forest, probably no rangers to worry about.

>>136389 Back on /k/ people in the western US would constantly talk about BLM when discussing places to shoot. AS I understand it the Bureau of Land Management just has a stupid amount of land in California/Utah/Arizona that sits there and does nothing. I don't know if there's any in Texas, but you could always just migrate a bit north.
Of course, all the BLM land could be shitty land no one wants and therefore have no access to water sources or something. I don't know, I'm from the east.

I don't know if you're still on about getting planks, but I do know than way back a thousand years ago, them viking-folk made planks by cutting trees into the length they wanted, then cutting them like pies. Leaves you with a bunch of wedges you can cut up a bit into nice planks. Might be worth trying, if you can get the rangers off your back

I haven't seen your previous threads. Are you building an underground home?
Weird Texan !!vZHDi0mGEw+
>>136971 I already found enough, some already felled timbers from the USDA charter section of the woods and then some supplemental planks from home depot.
>>137024 Was. Its basically done, there's 5 planks piled outside the finished interior frame of the thing waiting for the tarp and then dirt to be piled on it. I found a route to the location thats on the opposite side of the area but I don't know how much of a hassle the walk will be.

Fuck it. I'm going to check out hippie jeus's operation for the week, as much as I've been painting them as a cult, they're making some damn cool applications of homesteading. Right now they're in the process of constructing a two story house from cob and making vertical gardens from loading pallets.

Would you like a travelling companion? I'm in Houston, have a car and want to go innawoods. Was actually thinking about going to galveston for awhile and going fishing or something.
Weird Texan !!vZHDi0mGEw+
>>137570 >>137549 The walls were to be lined with a wood frame then tarp, then another wood frame on the inside that I've already completed. Loam already drains pretty well and there's a giant pvc pipe waiting in the back of my car that I was going to cut down into pieces for a kind of gutter to relieve stress on the roof during rain.
>>137572 Idk, at this point I'm really looking for better supplemental work that might take me to one of a few cities or areas, I don't have much time for leisure right now.
!osOqgKQ8WE
>>137574 That's cool.
Did you ever look at the "50 dollar and up underground houses" book? It's very helpful and has some designs that don't require you to perform crazy roofing and wall magic tricks to prevent collapses. Some of the designs in there are actually pretty cool.
Weird Texan !!vZHDi0mGEw+
>>137588 Yep another anon reccomended it to me in one of the earlier threads, though most of his designs rely on building into hills. I'm not concerned about collapses because the layer of dirt I planned on putting over the frame wasn't going to be much and the dimensions are pretty humble for the size of the wood supports that I'm using.
!osOqgKQ8WE
Quoted By:
>>137595 Oh, you're doing it on flat ground? Okay, that makes more sense. If you build it into a hill, you should follow his designs but yeah, you should just follow your own. Not like you can make very many varied designs if it's not into a hill.

One of the first of those "unschooled" kids, apparently he did something similiar to what I did, but internationally, started an organic foods business after that with the ecovillage. The 30 minutes rant was him talking about himself for most of it then describing how the ultimate goal of the community was to serve as a model for some publications hes making to publish for the sustainability/homestead movement. I'll be driving up to Eaker's ecovillage tomorrow and staying for a week. I have two interviews today for new jobs with enough hours to live on, but low enough to still have my freedom. On a cool note, on Thursday I checked out this cafe/bar for live music in town. Before the bands started playing I had my computer out and this group of older men noticed my disheveled appearance and that I was alone and invited me into their conversation. I told them my innawoods story and they bought me drinks and it would turn out that one of them was the owner of the bar and the other managed it, and they said if I ever get a band together they'd be more than willing to book us. Then they got shitfaced and gave me a bunch of elder wisdom about how they regret how they spent their youth.

>>136374 >where you work and learn about farming in exchange for room and board Or you could just get a job on a farm and learn about farming in exchange for a paycheck. There's tons of farming (organic/hippy or regular) down around Shiner and Alice. Have you applied at the King Ranch? I know it doesn't look like a lot of money but you have zero living expenses, they pay for your house, truck, food, etc plus you can sell any horse you break. If I was younger and didn't have a wife or kids I'd be a Kingero.
Weird Texan !!vZHDi0mGEw+
>>139602 Don't think I'm not looking/haven't looked for farm work, though I'll admit I don't much about getting into that. Most farm work I hear about people get through family friends or connections, and most craigslist postings I've contacted are looking for people with experience operating farm equipment.
>have you applied at the King Ranch Where and how?

>>139609 http://www.king-ranch.com/index.html I took some classes on range management there and talked to some of the Kingeros, I don't know how they got the job. I'm sure if you contacted them they could help you out.
As for farming work, with all the rain recently I know a lot of people will be cutting hay soon. Look for a job bucking bales and go from there.
Weird Texan !!vZHDi0mGEw+
>>139625 Eh, Kingsville is really in BFE, and I'm fine with either of these two jobs I'm interviewing for if I get them. Huntsville is nice for all sorts of reasons such as its close to Houston and if I ever get back into music it'll be easier to find a band and because I really want to finish fag end. I contacted Hippie Jesus because I didn't have anything sustainable lined up a week ago and it'll be good to not spend any money for a week and it looks like it will be a short, fun, and humorous learning experience.
