If you want semi expensive ones I recommend Leica Trinovid 8x42. I have those and they are almost as good as any top tier binoculars.

Nikon Monarchs are good value for money. I own the 8x36 which are nice and compact.

The top class Swarowskis are the best I ever tried. Leica Ultravid pretty solid as well, but not much better than the cheaper Trinovid.

Remember that the best pair of binos are the ones you bring with you hanging around your neck. If you buy too large binos and don't bring them or put them in your back they are not good at all. The bird has flown away when you get them to your eyes.

I recommend 8x magnification, but 10x are good as well. You know you have the right pair when you feel that the binos are a kind of extension of you eyes.

I just got those Endeavor 8x42s in November, they're really fantastic for the price. Barely visible chromatic aberrations at the edges, and every bit as clear of an image as my father's Leupold 10x50s.

Also: there's a rebate program that should still be going on for $50 off of those.

I've got a small pair of Bausch and Lombs. Considering the abuse I give my pack (which is where they are kept) they have held up remarkably well. I use them while hunting.
